My worst present ever has to be an electric hedge trimmer from my OH. I remarked to him once in passing while I was trimming the hedge with shears that an electric version would be nice, he took me at my word and that's what was wrapped up under the tree for me that year. My face when I unwrapped it must have been a picture....:o

Not really sure if this counts as the thought was there... Years ago I received a box of bath stuff, one of those cheap and nasty boxes you buy from a pound shop. I'm really, really fussy on what cosmetics I use and this smelt so awful, even through the box that I'd never use it even if I wasn't fussy. I made appreciative noises though, like you do and out of politeness when asked I said I liked using it but sadly had run out (it had gone to the charity shop straight away).

The next year I got exactly the same box because 'they knew I liked it'. And again the following year, and again the next year. That year I had to go into their spare room to get something and while I was poking about I stumbled accross a big box which smelled familiar... on closer inspection I found they'd stocked up on my box of smellies! There must have been about 20 boxes of the same pack!
    !

You'll just have to tactfully tell them well in advance of next Christmas that you've had to stop using these particular bath products because you've developed an unexplained allergy to them and they bring you out in a painful skin rash !
  • MIL gave me cotton wool and doggy-poo bags! Oh, alongside some fairy cake cases! :(
  • I was once given a 'winter car care kit' (de-icer/scraper/windscreen wash sachet)... and I didn't even have a car! :-)
Surely it's only a case of "it's the thought that counts" if some thought is actually involved?!

I'm a Doctor Who fan - see, no shame at all and it's the one thing I always insist people don't buy for me because of what happened a number of years ago as a child. I opened my first present and got a Doctor Who book. I was very pleased as was the giver. Everyone else looked less pleased. The second present was... the same book. People started looking worried... the third one was, you guessed it, the same book. So was every present that year. I had 12 of the things! I took a number back but had to laugh.

I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...

I moved to Liverpool for a better life.
And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!

My Husband got a Lynx gift set with 'chocolate body paint' in the set, a set of 4 Coronation Street soaps which looked about 10 years old (judging by the characters, Fred Elliot and Les Battesby), and a pair of socks size 6-9 his feet are size 11!
Guess who all these ' gorgeous gifts' where from?
    His Mum & Dad! LOL!!

LOL! Perhaps we could swap socks? I am a size 7, however, big sister in her wisdom bought me size 9-11. I was slightly confused! Otherwise I didn't really get anything as horrendous as some, but things I just wouldn't use - Ebay it is!

After so many Christmasses of dreadful presents and polite disappointment, every Christmas my family do a "Lucky Dip".
Everything gets wrapped in the same (cheap) paper, nothing is over a few quid (mostly charity shop), and it all gets put in the middle of the room.
We have a competition to see who can put in the most awful, useless, hideous stuff (had to stop twice this year because we were laughing so much!) as well as a few goodies...
At the end you can have a good swap around (Some people love what others hate!) and everything useable goes back to the charity shop, so realy it's just a way of making a donation and having a good laugh!

MUCH less stress and much more fun...

oh and the joint winners for worst prize this year were a 10" wooden carved eagle that looked like it had been carved with a spoon and had a faded 'welcome to albania' scrawl along the bottom, and a hideous teapot shaped like a hige fat chef that was 'not suitable for use with hot liquids'.
... and whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should ...
  • My friend and her family always come to Christmas Dinner (works well as we share chores and they save money). They usually bring a needy friend with them who gives me the strangest gifts. This year he proudly gave me a square piece of wood that looked like the top of a bannister. As I unwrapped it he said hopefully ' you could use it for lots of things'! (ummm - top of a bannister maybe...) I am usually quite good at expressing delight over dodgy gifts but this year my face must have been a picture - took a couple of moments before I could say how lovely it was...
