My parents have just bought a new Bosch fridge freezer from Currys.
It was delivered as they expected, and seemed to be working as normal.
My parents filled the new fridge with around £50 worth of food.
The next morning they discovered that the new fridge was not working properly - not cooling sufficiently, and the controls had been set correctly.
They will be arranging with Currys for a refund or replacement for the fridge.
What I would like to ask is how my parents go about claiming back the money they spent on the food that was wasted...and would the fridge manufacturer or Currys be responsible ?

Edited to say that someone from Currys actually visited their house and checked that the fridge was set correctly.

If the spoiled food is as a result of the faulty freezer, then yes you should be able to claim for the consequential loss.

Your parents would more than likely need to prove the loss but the food packages and/or receipts should be sufficient. It is not a bad idea to take pictures of the spoiled food as well.

so based on that theory why do we have insurance... why do we pay month after month for?

It depends on the value of whatever's gone wrong. For £50's worth of food, I wouldn't risk a premium hike. For a house fire where I'd lost everything I own, or a flood that did 20 grand's worth of damage I would.
