New fridge freezer spoiled food

My parents have just bought a new Bosch fridge freezer from Currys.
It was delivered as they expected, and seemed to be working as normal.
My parents filled the new fridge with around £50 worth of food.
The next morning they discovered that the new fridge was not working properly - not cooling sufficiently, and the controls had been set correctly.
They will be arranging with Currys for a refund or replacement for the fridge.
What I would like to ask is how my parents go about claiming back the money they spent on the food that was wasted...and would the fridge manufacturer or Currys be responsible ?

Edited to say that someone from Currys actually visited their house and checked that the fridge was set correctly.

  • Very hard to prove that they set controls properly.
If it was me I would claim from contents insurance, providing it was financially worthwhile.

  • Well in that case, ask them. But, do they have contents insurance?

  • Yes they will have contents insurance, but if you claim from your own insurance you can expect the premium to go up the next time it's due for renewal
  • thats one of the things insurance is there for

Not a very money saving thing to do really, is it?!

Claiming on insurance policies not only costs you your NCD & increases premiums over the next few years, but usually carries an excess -- all for the sake of £50.

so based on that theory why do we have insurance... why do we pay month after month for?

  • Hmm, if my fridge freezer wrecked my food it would be more like a £200 loss and therefore worth a claim, but yes, it would increase the premium, so I would attempt to get the money from Currys first.

Did they let it settle for 24 hours first? The coolant needs to spittle before you turn it on the instructions normally state to leave it for 24 hours

I think it was left to settle for a while, but not 24 hrs.
They had to keep the fridge over Christmas, & it was running all the time, but still not cooling properly.

Newer fridge freezers can be as little as 3 hours. I just got a new one and instruction manual said to leave for 3 hours :D I was quite surprised as I thought it was 12-24 hours.
