^^^^^ this is, of course, the other option - just disable the (obviously poor) internal wifi card in your laptop and use a wifi usb adapter. As stated before, done this with mini-Gun #2's laptop, and hey presto! no more poor wifi performance :)

(you don't need to get an N router and adapter, as your daughter's wifi performance is ok, just need an adapter for yours - and it'll only cost around a £5-er ;) )

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Hi Gunjack. I do have this ability to cause chaos when i post:rotfl:
I have ordered 20 metre cable for the lounge, as I can lay that easy,£2.30.on its way. However, intersted in latest way, dongle /usb?? for the conservatory, Et.al How do I disable wifi card in laptop, and can you recommmend a USB adapter.loads on ebay ? or are they all pretty similar
I know I,m impatient, but this aint gonna get better on it,s own. I think my new router is a N. Not certain.
Last night, I could not get stable wifi, connection, gave up, plugged into router, 7.9mbs. Took it to bed, 7.5 wifi, then dropping out again.even this morning, using ethernet, 1.1..0.2..7.5; no sense. now wifi. 6.9 in lounge. It,s all over the place, and this cannot be DLM surely. Even with the router ALWAYS on now (changed it from 30 mins default) it still logs me off when idle.

    My son,s a shrink, I,ve booked an appointment;:rotfl:
    thanks again.ps, are you an insomniac like me ?? 2.42. I was still reading then, getting ready for my 5am walk. told you I need a shrink.;;;

    1. most laptops have a physical switch to turn off the wifi, if not ALL have a soft switch, usually the Fn key plus one of the F-keys along the top row of your keyboard.

    2. if your router's operating on N+G mixed, then an N or G dongle will do you, don't pay more than a fiver :)

    3. my insomnia comes & goes - last night was just a bad one :)

Hi, It goes through to n mixed, I didn,t log on g like you advised me on my last router.
It,s on/off like a yoyo at present, . hell of a game staying connected. kids off school.
inSIDDer shows I,m getting overlap with 2 others, on 1. but cannot do anything about it. Mines on 1+5, tried changing to others, but it,s worse. Didn,t realise how many wifi,s were around me.There is a physical wifi switch on side of pc, flashes like a sat dish, can turn it off. When I put ethernet into socket under it, it still picks up wifi signal, unless I press it off. That must be it.I,ve inadverdantly pressed it before, and lost signal. edit 802.11b/g/n router

so, you can easily turn off the internal wifi card in the laptop, force the router to just use one channel by selecting G only in the interface and selecting a channel for minimum interference, and get a wifi usb dongle. Job done for a fiver and 10 mins :)

  • sorry to jump on your thread but got a few questions:

i have bought some of the TP link homeplugs, had them a few weeks now and they are performing faultlessly. I have wired in my sky box (anytime +) my main pc, and my smart TV (you tube, bbc iplayer etc) I now want to expand my wireless signal all round the house so i can use laptop / ipad / tablet, can i connect a wireless router to a homeplug in the bedroom so that it would broadcast wifi there or do i have to wait for the TP homeplug wireless (coming soon according to the website)

I have looked but it's not very clear and i'm not that savvy on networking.

As advised, turn of channel bonding, and ask your neighbours to do the same if they are also using it.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

You should be able to use any Homeplug with a wireless access point built in, it doesn't have to be a TP one. Homeplugs should be compatible from one brand to another.
