I purcahsed an Orange Sydney PAYG phone as a Christmas gift from Asda but the phone is barred. We have not received the welcome text from Orange to advise us of the phone number so cant use the automated customer service number as you need to input your phone number in to progress. As the handset is barred we cant use the 450 or 439 number either. I have sent Orange customer services an e-mail and then got a reply saying they would be in contact within 7 days. Any suggestions?

Go back to ASDA and get the money back.

Unless you have some strange reason to spends ages trying to sort things out (why you'd want to do that I couldn't possibly guess).

    Don't bother registering it.

Just take it back to Asda for a refund.

Orange have currently got a MASSIVE problem with phone blocking on new PAYG handsets - it's all over the internet.

They've had a massive system failure.

I don't remember ever receiving such texts.
I think you can find the number by going to
    Settings >> Phone Identity
    or
Settings >> About phone >> Status

All new Orange PAYG have to be registered before use unless you buy from an Orange shop and they do it for you!

    As I said:

They use a 3rd party company for activation/registration and something went wrong a couple of weeks ago, resulting in many new PAYG phones currently getting blacklisted when they are first turned on.

It is also currently happening to 'used' phones which have been unlocked and are currently on a non-Orange SIM.

The problem has only just come to light because of a surge in new phones due to Christmas

This will probably take them weeks to sort out, so best action is to take the phone back for a refund, because it is faulty (which it is!).

From other forums, it would appear that there isn't a solution at the moment. The Orange shops can't help.

I had my 14 month old Orange San Francisco blacklisted by Orange in error. They managed to lift this yesterday after 2 weeks. There is a landline number you can call.
  • I am also having this problem. They have asked for copies of a credit card statement or bank statement. I have faxed 2 copies of a c/c statement, the first they say they didn't receive, the second didn't show any transaction because it has a nil balance so not acceptable. The tale goes on and on. I've had the phone 3weeks now and it still has the barr on it. Orange customer services are diabolical. Asda won`t take it back because the problem is with the line supplier. I despair and am looking for any suggestions please.

You bought it from Asda. It IS their problem, even though it is Orange's fault. The phone is faulty because it cannot be used.

Tell Asda that you will be instigating a chargeback, if you purchased by credit card.

You're not alone.. I have now faxed requested documents 3 times, and all have allegedly been illegible. I eventually managed to get email and snailmail addresses and have sent scanned images today. I got an automated reply to say that it can take up to 7 working days for emails to be looked at. I'm hoping they'll get the snailmail quicker!

What a bunch of  they are!
