OK, there are some idiots & know-it-alls here.

In what category would you place the Scientists and Physicists Einstein etc - who developed and proved the Laws of Thermodynamics?

Isn't that also why thermostats exist?

They exist to limit temperature and therefore waste, and to increase comfort.

Settings a thermostat once, and a timer once is much easier than thermostat twiddling.

I actually prefer thermostat twiddling as you call it. I turn the heat up when I am in the lounge and turn heat down to the lowest setting when going to bed or leaving house. It's in the hall so it's easy to use. I'm in the habit of doing it and a timer would annoy me by coming on when I am held back at work and I'm thinking about the wasted heat. I can go out after work for drinks without having to think about the heating as I know it's off (well it's set to low which is almost off) and not wasting heat. It'll be cool when I get in but it doesn't take long to heat up.

Ours have six different time zones throughout the day so the temperature can be set to different values at different times - I don't have to manually change the temperature throughout the day.
  • mine has 2 settings off and off when it gets down to 5* then ill think about putting it on

It's combined. The thermostat is set to different levels during the day - if the temperature drops below that, the boiler comes on. The boiler is never "off" so the house never gets cold.

As we're there most of the time and have health problems so we feel the cold, I don't want the house to get cold and have to wait while the temperature gets back up to a comfortable level.
