Tyre wear

I've just noticed that my rear right tyre has almost completely worn.

All 4 tyres were fitted about 15 months ago and I've done under 10k miles.

The tread on the other 3 is healthy.

Is something unbalanced?

If anyone has any ideas what's causing it I'd be very grateful. Thank you

  • They should all wear pretty much evenly if everthing is ok.

Apart from earning a brownie for stating what most people would call obvious that's not strictly true. :) Front wheel drive cars (most are FWD these days) wear the front tyres at a much faster rate than the rear tyres, how much faster depends on the car and the driving style.
  • I would also be checking for a seized brake caliper.
  • Why has the OP not noticed at any point in the last few thousand miles? I guess this is the first time in 10,000 miles he's looked at them. This demonstrates the values of weekly checks. The abnormal wear would have been caught earlier before it got to the point the tyre needed replacing.

    IMHO,
You will need them to check the alignment of the rear wheels.

Have you had a bump? Got non standard suspension?

Or as the other guy says, check rear brakes, jack up both rears at the same time, release the handbrake check tyre spinning and then go up the hand brake 1 click at a time checking both sides for tyre spinning resistance on each click of the handbrake and see what happens.

    Its all across.

I did have the rear brake pads replaced about 6 months ago so perhaps this might have something to do with it?

If say they weren't fitted correctly should the garage offer something towards the cost of a new tyre do you think?

Someone changed the tyre out for the spare whilst in the garage for some reason?

No that wouldn't have happened as the spare tyre is a different make to the other 4.
