HTC Wildfire S

I got this wonderful phone for xmas.
Now I have linked it with my wifi.
I have used the internet on it, news sites, a few parenting forums, twitter & FB.
I have downloaded some free apps.
I have played games on it.

This is amazingly technical for me! Am a bit of a technical no-hoper.

How do I turn off the wifi at home? ATM it's always on. Does it use any money. I used up the rest of my credit quite fast snice xmas day. Have topped up my £10 today so now have free internet (100mb) till 26/1/12.

Is there a different deal I can get?

Am on orange atm.

I may come back with more questions as have no idea what I'm doing.

Oh, there are also application updates available but I've no idea what to do.

When I were a lass we didn't even have a land line phone! :rotfl:

Anyway, any help/advice any of you technical people can give will be gratefully recieved.

Oh yes. When I'm playing that adicitve jewel game & it's saving my scores, does that use my internet?

Oh & this phone needs lots of charging!

Many thanks

Lisa, the technical no-hoper! :o

If you are at home and have a wifi network then use this as you the won't use up any of your allowance. The allowance will be used when you are away from home and need 3G access.

The case for ever turning wifi off is that if you are away from a wifi network the phone will continue to check as to whether one is available and this will be a drain on your battery.

If you download application updates then do it at home where you have use of your wifi network and won't be using any of your data allowance.
  • So how did approx £3.50 of money get used?!

I did send a few texts at 12p per text!

Bit worried, can imagine needing to top up in a few days after telling off my dd for needing a £10 top up 5 days after she was topped up!

Bet you have Mobile Data on thats downloading stuff/updating in the background .
Mobile Data from network not WiFi.

Turn Mobile Data off unless required .
Smartphones are mobile computers with a small battery .

As you are a new user you probably have everything on the phone switched and draining the battery .

wow i bought the wife same phone having same problem s data roaming and using all battery juice
got it on payg but am looking at a sim only contract but just how much data roaming would she need to get who is offering best deals
  • I have managed to turn off various things! :D

Shinhead, my phone is on Orange. My sim was in my previous phone so my dh bought me a sim free phone from Amazon.

I just took the sim out of 1 phone & put it in this one.

I am going to assume my £10pm orange will be enough internet for me, esp as I have wifi at home.

And I've turned off roaming for when I'm out & about so I should only use the wifi. hopefully...!

    Lisa

EDIT: sorry shinhead, just realised you've already bought the phone!
  • Just remember that, although not using any money, the Wi-Fi will drain the battery if left on all day.

You can create a little shortcut button, either on the home screen, or one of the screens that you swipe sideways to see, that can turn Wi-Fi on and off at will.

    Just borrowed the OH's phone...

There appears to be a few ways to create shortcuts and widgets, but the easiest seems to be to:

Touch and hold the place you want the shortcut to be (can be home screen if there's space, or another 'side' screen.)

A menu should appear, click the arrow next to widget

Scroll to settings, there should be another arrow

    Scroll to Wi-Fi and select

The widget should appear on your screen. Press it, and it will animate before either switching on or off.

You can do this for most settings and applications so you can access them quickly.

<edit> If you want to remove any widgets you create, just touch and hold the widget, the screen will 'grey out' and then drag it to 'Remove'.

I know the OH's phone can go a few days without charging by switching things like this off, and using the app 'Advanced Task Killer' to stop apps running in the background when not using them.
