There are lots more smaller companies around than there used to be - possibly a local high street type that has branched out into internet sales?

Edit: Yep, they are part of a TA based in Harrow.
  • So where do we stand regarding the price we supposedly paid?

What do the terms and conditions say about when the contract is formed?

Did you consider booking directly on the Emirates website? The fares offered there are reasonable, and then you get twice as many miles in their frequent flyer programme (which is quite a good one).
If you opt for the "Flex" fares via the Emirates site, you will get double the miles but you will also pay significantly more for your flights. Probably only worth it if you need it for status, or intend flying regularly enough with them to accumulate enough points to use.

They do have a price match promise which may benefit the OP but I don't know how easy it is to win a claim on it.

If it is a small company it's possible the office number was on divert to a staff member's home over the bank holidays.

I must say I think it's kind of rude-and kind of arrogent to comment on what people choose to spend Christmas day doing. Not everyone feels the need to spend it in a traditional booze fueled, family feuding enviroment eating themselves silly-even Christians ;) The OP could even have had a traditional Christmas AND booked flights before or after the festivities as it wouldn't take all day to book a flight for most normal people.
