There are lots more smaller companies around than there used to be - possibly a local high street type that has branched out into internet sales?

If it is a small company it's possible the office number was on divert to a staff member's home over the bank holidays.
I must say I think it's kind of rude-and kind of arrogent to comment on what people choose to spend Christmas day doing. Not everyone feels the need to spend it in a traditional booze fueled, family feuding enviroment eating themselves silly-even ChristiansThe OP could even have had a traditional Christmas AND booked flights before or after the festivities as it wouldn't take all day to book a flight for most normal people.
