T-Mobile Voicemail (iPhone 4S)

Hello,
Just got an iPhone 4S and a SIM only contract for 12 months.
I know it costs me (around 16p) to call my voicemail, but I don't want to pay that!
I've seen both HulloMail and ON Voicefeed to give you a 'visual voicemail', but I've used HulloMail in the past and didn't really like it, and ON Voicefeed says it might cost extra/eat into your minutes. I don't really like to try them as they've been a pain to remove in the past.
I'm ok (ish) with it eating into my minutes to use ON Voicefeed, but I'd like to know it doesn't cost me.
I've heard you can just call your own number, can anyone confirm this is free/do-able?
Any advice would be great, can't figure out what to do!

I'm not sure of the truth behind this but I've heard that if you have some sort of leverage against T-Mobile (such as you're looking to renew your contract, or they've treated you badly) and say that you can't do without Voicemail, then they might offer you Voicemail for free. I haven't tried this because I've never needed Voicemail, but I've heard that someone has supposedly achieved it.0

I was just on the phone with them (getting my number moved), and they offered me some voicemail package for around £2.50/month. I declined and said I might use a 3rd party. He said they're not supported and wouldn't give me and advice/info.
Thank though!0
