Samsung Galaxy S2 and excessive data usage
Options
Hi
My friend has just upgraded to a Galaxy S2, and has 750mb as part of her price plan. All she insists she's used the Internet for is downloading a few apps, facebook and web pages yet she's still managed to use 2gb in a month. Coupled with the fact that for 24 days of her billing month she was using a Samsung Wave this seems rather excessive.
She doesn't have wi-fi at home so it's her only source of Internet access. Is there anything we should be switching off on the phone at all? Or any help you can give?

Turn data off except when required
Turn active sync and background sync off .
use My Data Manager to monitor connecting apps
use LBA Privacy Guard to block internet access to apps that dont really need it .
Both from the Android market .
2GB sounds more like downloading video streaming or watching BBC IPlayer .

That's a lot of data to be going through a month can your friend use wireless hotspots such as BT open zone?0

She was using it to download music, after much coaxing from me I finally got it out of her. I've warned her not to do that again and it should be fine. To be fair, she only had the Galaxy S2 for seven days out of her billing month so it does seem absolutely crazy0

As above, but I leave background data on and active auto sync off, I have used less than 100mb since the beginning of the month, the autosync is what gobbles up a lot of data useage, as stuff like facebook is forever updating with useless information.0 -

To be fair she did say she had a lot of texts from facebook and notifications coming through on her phone, as soon as I said 'You're not actually as sad as to want to have messages from facebook are you?' She quickly turned them all off yesterday!
Checked her usage and it's 13mb in two days, so not bad at all and a dramatic decrease.0 -

yep, when I 1st had my two android handsets, I was dissapointed with how 'thirsty' tey were with data, now it is using less than my previous symbian, I still go on the net etc and even using 'what's app' for picture messaging does not seem to use much, it's just how the owner manages it, all the things that are possible can still be executed, weather is updated 4 times a day.0
