Supermarket Petrol

Hi

I have been advised by a friend who works on oil rigs not to buy supermarket petrol. He said they add things to it and you do not get as many miles to the gallon as you would from a shell or BP garage. Does anyone know if there is any truth in this.

Thanks
Jayne

There are different blends between all of the fuels on sale, but they are all within tight tolerences and the major (energy company) brands wouldn't add anything to the supermarket branded ones would they, they supply them after all!
It's a bit like saying Mr Kipling would add something nasty to the supermarket branded mince pies, just to make them look bad.

Jayne I think its the things that supermarkets don`t add that would make the difference. :)

I've tested the theory between Tesco and Shell standard petrol in a Focus. Absolutely no difference over a week of identical journies.

Repeated the test with standard diesel in a BMW3 series. Same outcome.

So, for my cars and fuels at least, the urban myth is a load of tosh.

I dunno tho,The garage where I live is Tezaco & the one that's just closed was Maxol, now I get better MPG with the Maxol than I did when using Tescos' or Asda's petrol & I get even better milage using BP petrol in my 1600 Pug 206.
  • The biggest difference between supermarket and forecourt fuels are the price.

Asda is significantly cheaper then BP/Shell :D

Same stuff from the same place.

  • Why would someone working on an oil rig know anything about the quality of refined fuel?
