What have you learnt over the years about the workplace? (wherever that may be!)

That the best way to approach any job is in a friendly, enthusisatic way, making compromises with people, being open and honest and always looking for ways around a problem or issue instead of simply moaning about it. Having open dialogue when you are disappointed in something, but accepting any ultimate decision with a smile on your face.
In essence realising there are a multitude of personalities in any workplace, you won't get on with all or agree with all, but need to work with all and treat everyone as you would like to be treated yourself, and behave in a way that makes you an employee people want to work with0

I think this is really fab advice:T There will always be people you can't win over, as it's just their personality but you can kill them with kindness 0 0

Don't start telling people your life history the minute you meet them....don't assume everyone is your friend....don't assume that just because you get on with someone, they will ever fight your corner/be loyal to you etc.
Don't add people to your facebook (at least until you've left).
If people have the same gripes/issues as you regarding a situation - don't assume that if you act as spokesperson regarding this issue, that anyone will have your back - 9 times out of 10 you'll be on your own.
Don't assume that your manager gained their position through hard work - some will have, others will have got their through having the right friends.
If you don't show what your boundaries are from the start (ie first few weeks) you'll be walked over and treated like a fool (or worse bullied) for the rest of your time there. By this I mean are you willing to be laughed at/humiliated/taken advantage of etc - only you know what you will put up with - first signs of anything you are uncomfortable with stamp it out straight away.
Of course these are just things that I have learned (the hard way and through watching others), but they are things I always bear in mind now when starting a new job, along with a willingness to get along with anyone and do the best job I can with pride and dignity.
Just to add, there are some lovely people out there in the workplace and you can make some fantastic friends - but just remember to hold something of yourself back until you know who you can trust - genuinely good people don't expect you to bend over for them at every/the earliest opportunity When you're going through hell, keep going...0 When you're going through hell, keep going...0
