            Bosses and peers notice who does and doesn't turn up to the Christmas and other parties. Unless you're a very valuable member of staff, its all part of the management game for figuring out who is promotable and who goes the extra mile, therefore make sure you go, you mingle, pretend to drink (otherwise you'll get thought of as the boring non-drinker and no one will share any gossip with you) and pretend to like and socialise with your colleagues and bosses.
 It is fake behaviour, but its good for your career. Keep your eyes on the prize!

            If you want to get on, brown nose all those above you and those who you can see are rising into superior positions. Get in with the union but if you decide to become a spokesperson make sure that you can carry the members with you. Union reps often find a fast route into supervisory rolls within the company if that is what they desire and if they play their cards right. If you decide that you can't either brown nose or unionise then be prepared to accept whatever your fate decrees because the union will be prepared to sacrifice individuals to secure its own agenda, much the same goes for supervisors and managers. In short get in with one side or the other or you will be on your own.0

 Sorry but that is just a myth, i fail to see how getting legless at a xmas party is going to help me get promoted, and what about those who dont drink because of their religion etc, will they be classed as boring by their bosses?
 I have no interest any sharing any gossip, i have no interest in pertending to socialise with people, who quite frankly would stab me in the back if they had they chance, the people who i do get on with, we will organise to meet ourselves, we dont need to meet under a xmas work party banner.
 Christmas parties have no bearing on your Career!!!0

            Actually, as regards "workplace gossips" - I have found the best way to deal with them is to recognise that such people exist, work out who they are and then deliberately "feed them" with any information you want to get back to management.
 That way, you didn't give your "message" to management directly and cannot be held responsible for it BUT you can be sure and certain that if you say something to several of the "gossips" in quick succession that at least one of them will "pass the message on" and the job has been done for you of telling management whatever it is you wish to tell them and it's been non-attributable (ie because YOU weren't the one that said it).:rotfl:;):rotfl:

 Third post is it on this thread? A telling narrative? Oh dear oh dear. You are one of those that believes that co-workers need to socialise to gel the team, aren't you? And older workers and the ones you label as lazy don't fit into your ideas of happy teamworking at all do they?             I have learnt over the years that keep your head down and don't trust your colleagues as they'd stab you in the back as soon as your back is turned. Plus i was on good terms with our managing directors and they were the worst when at works parties they were the ones getting drunk and making themselves look foolish. I have also learned no matter what you do you are only a number on a payroll sheet.0

 I didnt say old people are lazy ,i refered to young people as lazy
 And yes, i personally believe that having positive relationships with colleagues is more beneficial ,of course its personal choice, but this thread is about personal opinion

 I never said get legless or drunk, just give the impression of drinking, be seen socialising and doing the same as the rest of the group. Definitely avoid being the worst behaved people at the party by taking little sips, eating beforehand etc etc, try to have water between drinks (if possible), although this is tricky at non-dinner events.
 Christmas parties and other social occasions that are out-of-hours are important to be seen at because its basically unpaid overtime and a test of socialising skills which is why some management teams care. The other reason is bosses can see who will make the effort to get into work for 8:30am and still do a good day's work (without complaining or appearing hungover) despite getting home at 3am in the morning the night before.
 Unfair, especially on the non-drinkers, but then the workplace is unfair.0
