I normally opt for around 5GB for SR on customer installs. I turn System Restore (otherwise known as the Microsoft Virus Vault) off completely for my own machines.
Those figures you've provided are reasonable so that shouldn't be causing you any problems. Follow the rest of Closed's advice along with his speed-up thread and you shouldn't go wrong.0 -
cheers guys
Have beene running Ccleaner for about 80 minutes so far, is this right? its still showing 0% completed and still working its way through temp internet files?0 -

Sorry how do i disable windows defender?
and stop those listed from running at startup using msconfig? (am a bit of a newbie with programs etc)
Thanks again0 -
to disable windows defender on vista or windows 7 - from the start menu, windows defender, tools, options, untick use real-time protection, under administrator options, untick use windows defender and untick allow everyone to use windows defender, click save to save settings. XP users can either do this or uninstall it in control panel
start, msconfig
see the startup tab
untick the things you dont want to run at startup (using msconfig)
reboot
ccleaner, try closing it, and try again - it should be quick unless you have told it to wipe free space.!!

Cheers again
Have disabled defender, loaded msconfig and closed all those unneeded applications, rebooted and running CCleaner again, have checked and un-ticked the box to wipe clean disc space but still taking an age?
Still showing 0% on thr completed bar for CCleaner, but if I go into 'my computer' the free space on C: drive is slowly increasing, so far its up from 12.4Gb to 29.8Gb and counting0 -
Does it matter if it does/has been wiping free disc space? or is it just quicker if i turn it off?0
-
only needed if you are planning to sell it, and don't want the data recoverable.
it shouldn't wipe free space by default!!
