Pretty unusual to be purchasing a car via Debit Card - and not get a voice referral. It's the type of purchase / value that attracts them.

So be prepared for the unusual style of questions such as the last credit to your account / how many DDs you have / name a couple that aren't utilities and - the approx values. Are just a few of the questions I've had on every car purchase.
Am I the only one that would feel uneasy been asked to talk to someone about this without calling my bank myself?
If the situation arose where I needed to purchase such an amount & it needed 'referral' I would far rather call First Direct myself knowing that I was actually speaking to my bank and get it verified myself than speaking to someone who I didn't know.

After I'd done that I'm sure that they would be able to allow the amount to go through, if not whilst still on the phone to them.

    Although it does happen.
I paid £21k for a car with my Nationwide debit card and there was no referral. Chip and Pin transaction went straight through.

Try ringing your bank before hand and they can probably prevent your transaction from being referred / blocked.
I do this when I'm about to make a specific transaction that may attract referral, such as buying an expensive item online from an overseas website.

I paid for my car in Sept using Halifax debit card and it went through no problems, no authorisations or phonecalls needed. This was for £3500

Ditto I paid for my car by debit card in September, never spend anywhere near that amount in one go every before and went through fine no questions asked.

It's the merchant acquirer working for the dealer - who makes the call. And then they refer questions phrased by your Bank - and pass back the answers.

As the merchant acquirer contacts your Bank via normal authorisation of a Debit / Credit card ....... it's not that different. And none of the questions get close to normal security data.

If you made the call .... you could be ringing anyone.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • The limit is £35k for debit card transactions.

If I called the banks main number (08456100100) then I would know that I was speaking direct to them. They could then presumably set it at their end that it was me making the large transaction and so it could be tried again.
