Hi
I'm looking to purchase a car and have £3100 or so to use on the debit card. The dealers have card machines and Im wondering if this high amount will go through?
(I have previously used a credit card for £2500 which had security round it, they rang up to confirm, then let it go through, but that was yorkshire bank credit card and wondering if bank card will be different)
I have found this: http://www.halifax.co.uk/bankaccounts/help-guidance/managing-your-accounts/overdrafts/
But it doesnt really say for machines in shops etc. Maybe I should withdraw the money, dont really want to walk around with that though.

For debit cards there shouldn't be a limit although the shop may need to ring the bank and have them speak to you as you did before when purchasing with the credit card
I wouldn't worry as a car dealer should have to handle this on a regular basis0 -
When you purchase the car your card may get referred where the retailer will need to call to get an authorisation code and you may be requested to answer some security questions.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0

I've spent 6K on a debit card before with no problems. If the bank or company refuse, you can always give them a cheque - by the time the car is ready the cheque will have been cleared. I wouldn't give them cash - dealers don't really like handling cash transactions of that amount, plus they are obliged under money laundering investigations to perform checks which may delay the transaction.0

Ah ok thanks for everyones replies. I think Ill see what happens. I am slightly concerned they might ask for my telephone banking PIN for the debit card (the credit card doesnt have one) and I have forgot it again (as I never use it) but then again its not telephone banking so hopefully they wont.
Cheers0 -
They'll most likely ask you to enter the PIN for your debit card and then the bank will ask for your full address, postcode, date of birth, number of letters in your memorable answer, etc. If the bank are particularly incompetent they'll ask for these answers whilst your standing in front of the sales man, otherwise they'll ring you on your mobile and you can answer the questions in privacy (ie, outside).0

I've made a debit card payment for a lot more than this and only had to enter my pin number. No other authorisation needed.0

I paid the deposit for my car (~£2k iirc) with my Halifax debit card and it went through absolutely fine. Are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation? :cool:0

I paid for my car in Sept using Halifax debit card and it went through no problems, no authorisations or phonecalls needed. This was for £3500* Rainbow baby boy born 9th August 2016 *

Thanks for letting me know this, much appreciated! Hopefully be ok for me then too.
Thanks to everyone else too!0 -
Pretty unusual to be purchasing a car via Debit Card - and not get a voice referral. It's the type of purchase / value that attracts them.
So be prepared for the unusual style of questions such as the last credit to your account / how many DDs you have / name a couple that aren't utilities and - the approx values. Are just a few of the questions I've had on every car purchase. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
