can we be too thrifty

Options
This may be in the wrong forum but its here because my husband has said that my thriftiness is embarrassing sometimes . A couple of times during the run up to xmas I have mentioned the price of something or uttered the immortal words 'I could have got it cheaper' He has decided that I am becoming obsessed and that my quest to check out the price of stuff actually makes him feel uncomfortable sometimes.

I like to read the tips on here and have to admit that sometimes I think OMG that is sooo tight I just cant believe its true and I would never do that. But I do love to look for bargains and get a nice feeling when I have made a saving on christmas gifts or my food shopping or anything really :o.

We don't have debt and save up for events, holidays, etc. Ironically my husand avoids debt so you would think he would revel in my thriftiness. But it seems not, himself and my daughter laughed hard while shouting at me to come and watch a programme on TV about a coupon man who saved hundreds more than I ever could.:rotfl:

So how thrifty is too thrifty, should I become a closet thrift, should I just be more discreet. How do you be thrifty without becoming an obsessed scrooge type character open to ridicule?

Some of the things I read on here make me cringe, but then on the other hand, you don't want to be throwing money away.

Spending as little as possible and looking for deals on things you'd buy anyway is quite normal I'd say and on the whole extremely sensible, as it frees up more money for things you may not be able to get a bargain on or little treats for yourself.

I don't think what you do is OTT at all :) so I wouldn't worry too much.

  • Same here uolypool! I did the "how tight are you?" quiz and it turns out I'm 70% tight- the verdict was "You're frugal, you're thrifty, but on this site that's a little bit fab." I challenged my friends on FB and nobody else was over 50%. :o

The thing is I love the challenge of getting something cheaper and avoiding waste. OH is beginning to appreciate my ways (after years of throwing away bread just because it was past its date/ potatoes because they were sprouting etc), so hang in there! They may just come round to your way of thinking eventually! Just tone it down a bit within earshot maybe :rotfl:

My hubby often shudders when I say the same type of things as yourself :rotfl:. As long as you are happy :D

yes you can be too thrifty - to the point of embarrassement.

one of the questions on the quiz - 'do you ever follow the shop assistant around the supermarket to be reduced'

for me the answer is no way - and people who do are embarassing. its scrounging really. If you are so hard up you need to embarass yourself to get things cheaper - fair enough but i do feel sorry for that person.

i like to make savings on things i need/want to buy - but would never embarrass myself in the process

Of course when you're chatting away on MSE you're in the company of like-minded souls and it's so easy to forget that not everyone in real life thinks this way.

Found myself shouting at the tele last night Christmas All Star Family Fortunes ? The question was "What do we do with the leftover Christmas Turkey?"

Suggested answers included "Throw it in the bin" and "Give it to the dog"

Ooh I was screaming CURRY CURRY CURRY, for a good while. I don't think that has anything to do with money saving, more the amount of braincells they had between then

Shocked me even more when "give it to the dog" was a recognized answer.

  • I was just relieved that 'throw it in the bin' was a wrong answer.
I don't think that team did an awful lot of actual thinking, though, did they?! :rotfl:

It would depend how much leftover turkey we're talking about.

If there wasn't a lot left then I'd give it to the dogs.

Oh don't get me wrong, the dogs got a mountain of leftovers yesterday, brussell sprouts included :D but I got the impression it was large slices of meat they were talking about.

It's sandwiches in this house anyway, just about to make one now :o
