Can't Download Apps on a Nokia Lumina 800 - please help

I've recently upgraded my Orange phone to the Nokia Lumina 800. It's the first phone with apps I've ever had and I'm a complete nurd with technology.

I've tried to download apps through the phone but I keep getting an error message saying 'your account settings indicate that you are a child' and referring me to my PC to do the downloads.

I've tried to download the Zune software it suggests on my PC but it won't complete - gets to 99% and then freezes.

My 11 year old son tried to do something via the Xbox Live icon and linked it to the hotmail address he uses on his Xbox but we've even checked the date of birth on that and it shows my year of birth so i'm completely at a loss as to what to do. Any suggestions?

My 16 year old who has had an iphone for ages and is usually pretty good with the teccy stuff in our house can't even sort it for me (or says he can't!)

How about resetting the phone and adding a different hotmail address?
And to avoid any slurs to my name, I do not have the Mickysoft phone.

maybe your setting with orange are restricted rather than your hotmail address?
