  • Hi NJO,

    As far as I know 1024 bytes = 1 kilobyte , 1024 Kilobytes = 1 MegaByte or
    1048576 bytes = 1 megabyte , 1024 megabytes = 1 GigaByte.
In binary terms kilo means 1024 and not 1000. hope this helps.

    Thanks

There are 1024 bytes in a kilobyte, 1024 kilobytes in a megabyte and 1024 megabytes in a gigabyte. However it is quite common to find the over all denomination chopped down to be multiples of 1000. Eg. where gigabytes are concerned, sometimes they are classified as 1000's of megabytes, rather a multiple of 1024... it's a bit cheeky really... harddisk capacities are often talked of in this way....

when trying to work out how much you have downloaded.... or you taking into account, every little piece on a web page....... more graphics more download..... not just a specific file of music......
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)
  • Straight answer is 1024.
Marketing people round this to 1000 for ease of use (theirs).

    It's just powers of 2

    One bit is a state of either a 0 or a 1
    One byte is eight bits

0ne kilobyte is 2 to the power 10
One Megabyte is 2 to the power 20
One Gigabyte is 2 to the power 30
One Terabyte is 2 to the power 40

If you go to the tiscali website and go to the broadband bit, there's a section there which will give a brief outline of how much 2gb will give you re surfing/downloading photos/music files etc.

Also...if you log into your account, using your primary email, it will give you the option to view your usage over the last however many days you want. It shows you in mb, which I first read as gb and panicked because I'd used my quota in 3 days.

Having had a read through of this thread. It seems as though a simple mistake has been made regarding bits and bytes.

Broadband speed is quoted in bits. So your speed of 1Mbps is 1024 bits per second.

Download limits are quoted in bytes. So 1GB=8192Mb

A download limit of 2GB is equal to 16384Mb

    A lower case b means bits. A capital B means bytes. 1 byte=8 bits

I find all the time people talk only about bytes when they mean bits. It's an easy mistake to make.

2GB=16384Mb So you've got a long way to go yet. 16384Mb-446Mb=15938Mb

When checking your download figures. Keep an eye on the 'b'. Being a capital or lower case makes a difference by a factor of 8.

    15938Mb=1992.25MB

I have logged onto my wanadoo account, but I can't seem to figure out how to view my usage. Can anyone help.

Well i'm guessing the wannadoo is done with Mega bytes not mega bits, well you've downloaded about a quarter of your limit.

I'm currently with wannadoo for dial up, but i'm moving to freedom2surf after this, because the 2gb limit isn't good for downloading stuff.

I wouldn't even be able to download a free linux os as they are about 3.8gb.
