Using iPhone 4 in New York

Hi ya'll (merry xmas)

My missus and I are going to New York next year, we both have iphone 4s.

Is there a cheap way we can use our phones over there? Mainly for using the wifi/broadband/3gs without paying roaming charges, and ringing each other/friends in the states?

Normally it would be a case of just getting an american sim card, but the iPhone 4 has a specalist bespoke sim that is unqiue to the user (if I recall) so as I understand it, it is not as easy as just manually swapping sims (correct me if I am wrong).

You are wrong - it is just a micro sim (that refers to the size of the sim card)

    Are the phones unlocked?
  • you could use skype

If the phone is unlocked, then cut down the new sim card.

If you use T-mobile, cancel voicemail before traveling.

all sim cards are unique to the user, the only difference between a micro sim and a normal sim is a bit of plastic the 'chip' part is identical to every other sim card in the world.

therefore you can pick up an american sim and if it isn't a microsim you can cut it down and use it in the iphone aOK

As you've got the 4S, you could even use it on Verizon or Sprint, but that's where things start getting complex, as they're not GSM networks. That might be where the confusion has come from.

No thats incorrect. You can't use Verizon or Sprint on an iPhone 4S as the iPhone's sold as a GSM phone don't have the CDMA code needed.

The best thing is to get a H2O wireless sim off the web. https://www.h2owirelessnow.com/pageControl.php?page=index

You can buy them from ebay. You can have unlimited everything for $60. Just remember to change the APN to ATT.mvno.com or whatever it is. Just look for some guide on H2O wireless iPhone 4 or 4S
