Can I clean Wii lens with ordinary DVD lens cleaner?

I was wondering if I could use an ordinary DVD lens cleaner on the Wii. It is not reading any discs and I cannot find a Wii lens cleaner on the high street.

Thanks

  • Yes you can although I usually find when they've got to the point of not being able to read discs that a disc cleaner won't do and the lense needs cleaning with a dry cotton bud which means taking it apart. I would try a CD cleaner first as it may still be able to read CDs even though it can't read DVDs.
  • Yes it will be absolutly fine, but if you have a air can try blowing one of those at it to see if its just a build up of dust etc.

Thanks for the replies. We have some new discs and it'll not read any of them. I'll get a disc cleaner tomorrow, do you reckon I should try giving it a blast with the hairdryer as well? Otherwise was just going to get a 2nd hand one from Blockbuster or something. What a pain!!

and keep the can upright whilst using it ( or else water might come out ) causing more problems than you could ever imagine.

There's 2 types of CD lens cleaners wet and dry.
Dry is ok for general cleaning but nothing stubborn.
Try a wet CD cleaner if the Wii is still not reading disks

Thanks for the replies. Looks like the Wii is a dead one as it will not read the discs at all. Have giving it a good clean to no avail and they have a funny screw head so you cannot get into it with any old screwdriver. Bah!!

I believe Nintendo offer a repair service on Wii's.

Not sure how much they charge these days, but it might be worth it, especially if you have any downloaded content that you would lose if you got a new console.

An alternative is to buy a current deal for about £90 - 100 and you get an additional Wii remote and nunchuck with it. If you don't need these you can trade them in with the game you would get with the console to offset the cost.

You should get around £12 for a remote and £5 for a nunchuck, depending on colour etc. The game could get you up to £15 depending on what it is.

Thanks Bikertov - yes that is the plan.

I have today found a deal for a Wii with a game which seems too good to be true - whether they have any stock or not is a different matter, so I am not going to share until I am certain that it is a legit item for sale and is in stock - if it is then it is a bargain!! I guess it'll be Weds til I find out and it is dispatched and then I'll share.

I went to Comet today and asked on the prices for their Black Wii (all they had left in stock) and they had 2 on their system, one was for £99 and the other for £124 - both exactly the same item, games, controllers etc... but they had no stock of the £99 one but one of the £124. I tried to get them to charge me £99 and said if I could have it for that price I'd take it, but they refused saying it must be a discontinued item.

We have had it for 4 years and from googling, I think they charge £75 for the repair. We might as well buy a new one for a few ££ more.
  • mario kart bundle is £95 at play, unless you want the game and assorted garbage, trade it all in towards something you want or get less for cash, it will cost less than the repair i promise you
Who remembers when X Factor was just Roman suncream?

Have paid less than that for one with a game with more trade-in value too. :D

    We shall see.......
