So I'll lose £9k in the cars value but probably add about 60k miles to the clock."

I'm still intrigued,I can't think of a single car that is worth 55% of it's value after 5 years and 60k?????

I don't think there is animals as such, I challenge you to play with the 'What car' depreciation calculator and see if you can find that mythical beast of 20k new - 55% depreciation over 5 years.

Think about it! the UK used car market would have look quiet different if we had such low depreciation models, maybe the OP talked about another country.

A 7-year, 100,000 mile manufacturer-backed warranty still beats a 2-year manufacturer warranty plus an extra years' extended dealer guarantee that's limited to 60,000 miles though, don't you think?
The first two years are unlimited mileage, and the third is 'limited' to 60k if the vehicle is not maintained at a Dealer, but invariably the 'warranty' or goodwill will last up to 5 years, if the vehicle is serviced regularly to dealer standards.

I was merely pointing out that the 7 year warranty is not all it seems, it is still limited.

I suspect that a fair number of victims of the Teves MK60 failures would take issue with the implied guaranteed nature of VW's goodwill.
We have supplied and fitted new ABS pumps on vehicles up to 7years old FOC. It was invariably the customers that had not looked after their car, and had no service history that kicked up the biggest fuss, but we are still able to offer the repair kit for £200. We even had someone try to claim warranty on a 5 year old car, when they'd blatantly tried to disconnect the ABS themselves...and VW still did them a reduced rate fix.

...but aren't the forums just full of moaners who want to vent when something goes wrong?! The greater percentage that were dealt with effectively and courteously would go unnoticed. Any dealer that tells a customer to get lost without investigating the issue and at least putting a warranty/goodwill claim through (5minute job once diagnosed), is not worth their salt, and that is human error rather than a VW issue. You will get that with ANY brand, and any issue.

It really wasn't the disaster you suggest.

That is the art of reading forums and reviews seperating the moaning reviews/posts from the ones that offer good constructive criticsm.

I am very aware taht 99% of happy will never post, whilst a much higher proportion of moaners will.

It's all about seperating the wheat from the chaff.

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your help - it seems that loads of this advice has come from different ends of the spectrum and I've tried to take it all on board. I think the thing which this has really taught me is that I probably don't need as big-a-monthly-outlay as I had thought to get a new (to me) car; it's still just the case of trying to make sure that I don't buy a 'lemon' I guess.

    Thanks again!

    I've owned VW.
They were average, as was the dealer service.
They have as many problems as most other cars, and tend to be a lot more basic if you don't pay through the nose for extras.
Their warranty lags behind many others now.
I wouldn't rush out to buy another one, I wouldn't say no if someone gave me one.
