Find a friend who can haggle well and take them along. There are a lot of cars out there. If you like VW, also look at Skodas. I test drive cars all the time as I mystery shop them and I like Mazdas too. I would go Japanese for reliability...but it's really car-dependent. You can buy cars with service plans and decent warranties now. I've got a new German car and it's cost me £300 for the servicing for the next 5 years.

The salesman will try to sell you a PCP package, do some research if you think you might go this route. Basically buy a new car and hand it back after the time period and get a new one of the same make. I think various of the manufacturers are doing very low cost finance atm, though I can't remember who, goes in one ear and out the other...

Have to agree about the Skodas,I'm on my third, very reliable.
Keep an eye on their websit for interest free credit deals and/or 0% VAT

It's astonishing me time and time again, for a lot of dosh people buy new cars, loose anything between 20 to 40% of this dosh on depreciation when they can get a bedded-in in car for 2/3 less.

There nowt like a brand new car that you `bed in` yourself ;)

I've just ordered a brand new car, I know it will loose value the moment I am handed the keys but I think if you plan to buy outright an keep it for 5 years plus it can work out pretty cheap!

Car I went for is costing me £20k, £30 a year tax (free for year one), 5 years servicing included, 3 year warranty and 3 years breakdown also included (plus no MOT for the first three years!)

Looking at simillar models which are now 5 years old they are selling for about £11k.
So I'll losse £9k in the cars value but probably add about 60k miles to the clock.

To me that makes fincial sense in the long run- hopefully no hassle and once I've got it minimal costs for repairs etc.

What car is it if you don't mind me asking, with good residuals like that it must be something like an Audi or a mini.

Yes what make and model please, after taking out the servicing and free MOT and cheap tax for 4 years you are still roughly spend £2000 before fuel and repairs if needed (which is way way more than I would ever spend if I buy it from you after those 5 years for £9k).

If it is a Mini or an Audi I will probably not going to buy from you in 5 years as these makes in my opinion start to cost a bit too much for my liking.

OP if you fancy a new car and are not going to trade it in then the 7 year warrantie on the Kia's make them a good buy.

    If they don't appeal

    Keep an eye on:- http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/best-deals/

Arm yourself with a copy of What Car and narrow down your choices. Children, dogs, towing, off road etc

Decide whether to buy new, pre-registered, nearly new or second hand.

Read lots of reviews epecially user reviews (beware of the moaners though)

Spend a few months doing your research so that you know a good deal when you see it.

Some cars score 5 stars some will score 1 start he difference will not be a huge amount most new cars are pretty good nowdays but choosing an unpopular solid car can save you a lot of money.

^^^ BUT, FYI the 7 year warranty is still 'limited'. It will not include any wear & tear items outside the usual 3 year warranty period others offer, and to be honest, how many cars have non wear and tear problems in the 1st 7 years anyway? I believe it's also limited by mileage too, so may be invalid by the time you get to 4/5years anyway!

From memory, the mileage is unlimited in the first 3 years then up to 100k/7 years over the term (which ever comes first).

Wear and tear items are not covered by any manufacturer warranty anyway but it could be a handy safety net once the car gets a bit older.
