I don't think i've understood credit cards

  • I went to PC World today to have a hands on session with the Asus N55 (they only had the i5 on show) and I was quite disappointed if i'm honest. The keyboard felt cheap, but then I went around trying the other brands and most felt poor apart from the Sony Vaio's. I had a listen to the sound but couldn't tell how good it was as it was a noisy large environment. The screen looked smaller than I thought it'd be, and the video quality didn't seem that great but then I was playing the 'sample' movies and I don't imagine they're HD quality. Not sure what to do... It's still sexy and I want to use it in the future for messing about DJing at house parties so the B&O hardware should help with better sound output.

Do you have a CC yet? If you applied and got rejected, it may be better to just leave it a few months to see if any newer laptops come out you might like.
  • I must be lucky with my laptop then.

It was a Dell and cost about £800 8 years ago.

for the first 3 years I worked from home on it full time, a good 8-10 hours a day, and now I'm still using it at least 25 hours a week. Still going strong as far as I can see (but yes, I back everything up).

I think it's shocking that people only expect a 3 year lifespan. Yes, they get outdated, mine is slower than new ones but still perfectly ok.

  • Update:
I bought a Dell XPS 15 instead. Dell had a sale on with free upgrades for the HDD and RAM. Normal price was £1,263 and with the sale, plus discount codes from Quidco I managed to get the price all the way down to £649. PLUS, I made £20 in cashback on top of that. That is an insane price when you read the specs:
    Intel Core i7
    6GB RAM
    750GB HDD (7200rpm)
    2GB Nvidia 540M
JBL audio with integrated sub woofer!
    15.6" screen
    brushed aluminum
    2xUSB 3.0
    1xUSB/ESATA
    Backlit keyboard

The build quality is absolutely fantastic. I took a look at the Dell Inspiron (entry level) laptops in the shops and they felt cheap. When I got this delivered the metal was so cold I couldn't type on it :D Extremely pleased I didn't go for the Asus. The sound quality is very impressive when you consider how little space it has to play with, you can certainly feel the presence of the subwoofer. I'm an entry level audiophile so I know good sound when I hear it, but you have to keep it relative.

Concerning the credit card, they approved me but only for a measily amount. I will use it to buy a external mixer for DJing on my laptop which is around £200 and i'll be able to pay that off easily per month as the min payments will be low when spread over 15 months.

You should never use the same machine for DJing that you use for internet connections. What software are you using? VDJ? Traktor?

Let's hope you never have any problems with the laptop as Dell are one of the worst for repairs.

I gave you thanks for your post, I've just gone and bought an XPS 15 (slightly modified), and since I hit that order button I've been half happy half regretting it (had some awful trouble with Dell with my machine/others machines, lattitude, inspiron) so to read that it sounds like the xps 15 is a good build is quite reassuring!

My last laptop was an dell XPS 15. It lasted me 3 years. I now have a Medion lappy, with i7 processor. Paid £780 for it. LOVE IT! However, the build quality is nowhere near as good as the XPS, but my god is it powerful, and it doesn't over heat like the XPS did. I find that because I'm into gaming, I need a powerful lappy....and they tend to die fairly quickly.

    Why do you say that?
I've been told Traktor is the best to use. Considering the "Behringer BCD3000 Bcontrol Deejay Machine"

Well, it is just my opinion. I think it's beautifully made, and I didn't think it would be based on the photos i'd seen online and a Youtube review. I love everything about it! Even the power plug is coooool

My Dell Inspiron 8500 would get unbelievably hot underneath, I reckon you could fry and egg at those temperatures, but my XPS is just warm, even when i've been playing L.A. Noire for hours on end.
