    acstokes was asking why they are checking now...

    The reason HMRC is checking what happened in the 2007-8 tax year; resulting in so many refunds this Xmas is explained in a guardian article from 19th October I remember reading. Just checked and in summary the new IT system allows them to reconcile money paid in with that attributed to the individual tax payer's record. The article says 6m people are likely to get refunds vs 1m expected to get tax bills

    My son had a cheque from the tax man last week. a refund from 207-08 , nice xmas present.

    I think perhaps the poster is referring to pension contributions.........payments they have made into their pension?
