Had the nicest surprise this morning! I received a letter from the tax man yesterday about some tax overpayment. Idiot that I am, I looked at it briefly and assumed I owed money back. Started pesting and cursing about it and that they could send this to me just before Christmas until I had a better look and realise it was about a refund. Sure enough, got my cheque in the post this morning, somehow, I overpaid in 2007/08.... had no clue whatsoever...

Who said the tax man was always nasty! I must have been a good girl that he decided to send me that little present!!!

  • Lucky you!

I also received a couple of envelopes from HMRC this morning. Going back to 2009-10 & 2010-11, they said I had two employers at the same time both applying a PAYE code giving full tax-free allowances and therefore I have under-paid tax which they will recover in the current tax year by way of my tax code.

In fact I've had only one employer but did receive an occupational pension from which too little tax was deducted.

So the nice homework they have set me for the Christmas bank holidays is to reconcile their calculations with my own - which differ slightly. Oh well, it keeps the mind active.....

It now upsets things for 2011-12.
  • Me too!! I could not believe it!! 2007/2008, now I keep thinking its a mistake and they take it back!!

    Drama

  • Our payroll guy told me that I'd been taxed on my pension payments - the person doing payroll had changed and it had come to light. He gave me a form and told me to send it off and I ended up getting some pennies back, unbeknown to me they then decided to do a full tax assessment on me going back to 2008 and I ended up with 2 further rebates that I would never have known about or asked for - result - will believe it when the cheque comes though x
  • I also got a letter xmas eve stating a refund due for 2007/2008, when do you think the cheque will arrive??

it will say on the P800 it should be issued within 14 workings days,

but to give you an idea, PAYE repayments are issued on wednesday and sunday,, so it should arrive within 14 working days from the wednesday or sunday following the date of the p800
