I'd be more concerned by the toilet in the dining room than the lack of hall!I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I live in a house like this but the previous owners built a brick built porch that is in keeping with the rest of the house... lots of my neighbours have glass porches too... it works fine .. we don't have any problems with heating and although the porch is small we can hang coats but it means that no one dumps stuff there as you would soon start tripping over it.... I like it....#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

I've got one of these too, with a very small porch on the front (only just big enough to open the door into, but big enough for shoes/coats.
I don't really understand why anyone would want a hall - like someone else said, it's just dead space.
"what's this bit of your house called?"
"it's a lounge"
"what do you do there?"
"you sit and relax, watch tv, chat, listen to music etc2
"oh, OK. And what's this bit"
"it's a hallway"
"and what do you do there?"
"nothing, just walk through it and dump stuff there"
That said, we don't wear shoes indoors, so have no problems with dirt as people wander backwards and forwards through the living room. (which, incidentally, has to be a little more social than the hallway design?)0 -
thanks for all he different replies once again. with regards to the toilet in the dinning room, even though the estate agent has classed it as a dinning room its more of a play room/family room, there is a dinning room at the front left of the house.
I think a porch is probably the best bet, I might see if i can get a picture on here of the front of the house, because I've got no idea with all these buildings etc i'm probably have a awful looking porch on the front that ruins the look of the house.
maybe i'm more concerned with the privacy thing, ie front door opens and anybody is looking straight into the lounge, not sure i think that will bother me in the end, i suppose it is very much like a cottage but at the same time its alot of money I want to get it right.
please click on pic for a larger size...Listen to what people say, but watch what people what people do!!0 -
Ooooh, it's LOVELY! :j
I think you'd get away with a square porch with a pitched roof; it will make it look a bit more country cottage than Georgian gentleman's residence though.
Buy it! But I'm biased - look at what I bought!(It's going to be rendered and painted the same colour as yours and the downstairs windows are out and being changed back to tall and thin like the originals)

thanks, yes i agree a square porch would look nice, and I dont mind the cottage look. I would have to see whether the council would a allow a porch, knowing my luck they wouldnt.
ha ha yours looks a lot of work, I'd like to see a pic of what you finally do with it. see thats our problem we have no idea what you can or can't do or seen other examples of what people have done with there houses, shame there isn't a website whereby people post pics of what they have done.Listen to what people say, but watch what people what people do!!0 -
That's a good looking house, it's already nicely balanced. I don't think a porch would look right, is there room, it doesn't look like much room before you get to the pavement.0

hi theres, about 2-3 foot of space there, it wont be a big one, but It will porvide some privacy, the wife doesnt like the idea of a porch at all, neither does see liek the idea of a hallway inside, the whole front door into the lounge doesnt bother her, however I think its alot of money to spen without even having a hallway.
plus to the right is the main road into the estate to it is quite busy on the weekends and week nights.... not that really bothers me, i could live with thatListen to what people say, but watch what people what people do!!0 -
Personally I wouldn't add a porch. It just depends on what bothers you to be honest, some people wouldn't mind the lack of hallway, as the advantage is there is less wasted space (probably the developers decided against a hall to make the lounge appear larger), others like a hall. There seems to be an opportunity to introduce a generous hallway that would enclose the stairs, with two doors off of it leading to the lounge and diner. You could do it quite simply and cheaply with plasterboard and studs. But the downside is you will loose some of your lounge.0

We moved into a brand new house with a porch, which was only about 4x5 ft on the front to seperate the living room from the front door. This was the actual design of the house and we did fall in love with the rest of the house and thought we could live with the lack of an entrance hall.We lasted a couple of years before we found it unbearable. We don't have kids at home now but it was things like wet coats and dirty shoes and bringing in shopping which had to be trudged through the living room.I found even with 2 adults we were forver having to clean the floor.
We have now moved to house with a hallway and its heaven,it feels like we have room to move. All I would say to you is consider things long term it may be ok now but what about when the novelty of the new house wears off.If you do build a porch make sure its roomy enough.0
