I'd love to order one of these! I also like the idea behind the whole project to bring simple computing conveniences to people with no means to buy them.
I've heard that its possible to run high def video on there, and was considering using one as a small media centre pc.
When and where are they on sale?0 -
the R-Pi can play back 1080p easily.
As for going on sale...
They will be putting the first 10 or so of the first "test production batch" up on Ebay. after that they will start taking orders for delivery some time on the first half of January.
They will only be for sale via : http://www.raspberrypi.org/Laters

Holy crap! £1750 at time of posting #10, 5 days to go!! I'd rather wait a month and save £1730, but maybe thats just me...
Even I would rather have a Mac at that price0 -
So whats new about this beast then? Similar already exists in the guise of Atmel based Arduino, http://arduino.cc/en/Guide/Introduction or PIC based AMI18, http://www.picshop.nl/ami18_board.html boards and at a similar cost (AMI18 is about £22). Both are open source designs with a wide support community. Expansion is via plug-in boards called "Shields" to give network, wireless (inc. Zigbee), LCD, GPIO etc.0

So whats new about this beast then? ...
You try getting an Arduino board that can play back HD movies for under £22
It's aimed mainly for schools and is a capable "desktop replacement" for most people. Just add on a HDMI screen + USB keyboard and mouse and away you go..

There's supposed to be a very important announcement being made at 6am todayNotmyrealname wrote: »What does worry me is the concern I share with Bogtrotter. Even though its idea is to teach kids, sadly those doing the teaching aren't going to be up to the task. The teachers who taught me with the EMMA II have retired. The people who see the opportunity in the Pi are my age. My kids generation would have little interest at all and no imagination of what they could do with it and seem to have little interest in learning which is partly down to the way schooling is done nowadays where you're spoonfed to pass rather than taught to learn how to find out for yourself. Thanks to all who post constructively.

Nope.
But I'm waiting till the end of the month before ordering.
There's currently about a 3-4 week wait between ordering and delivery.Laters
