Trying to sort it over the phone will sadly be beyond the abilities of many call centre bods!!

Exactly, I'd worry they were going to screw it up even more.
I rang the council and reported it (fine). Then I offered to "pay for it". Oh they weren't set up for such an enquiry. After 20mins or so we just gave up.

Had something similar happen a few years ago when I called the council transport/planning dept to ask how I could feed back a concern I had about a new road layout they'd recently finished... I'm not a busybody with nothing better to do than ring the council, I promise :p

... but they'd changed a local road layout and done the lane markings so badly (no signs, short new lane changes needed to filter into side roads) that within the 2 weeks after them opening the road again I'd seen 4 or 5 near accidents as commuters panicked about the new layout and cut each other up going around corners.

One night after watching a taxi drift into the new lane markup at the last minute (arrogance/laziness or just hadn't noticed, not sure) and almost taking out 2 cycle commuters against the railings (!!!) leading to a road rage incident between them, I gave the council switchboard a ring to ask how to register my concerns about the road changes.

"I'm not sure", came the reply. "Are you a driver or a pedestrian?"

"I'm a driver", I explained, "I've been driving along that road for the last 5 years at rush hour."

"I see", the lady said, "and you've got a concern about getting into the new lane layout there. Have you tried using your horn?"

"My horn?" I repeated, wondering if I'd heard her wrongly.

"Yes, if you're having trouble getting into the new lanes, have you considered using your horn?"

I eventually hung up since i wasn't really getting anywhere, but to this day I always think back to that official council advice when I drive past that spot (now with lane signs up there, and extra white arrows on the road, so maybe she did feed it back to the road safety folks for all i know...).
  • They will notice and correct this error in due time.

If you call/write them, tell them to compensate you for phone/stamp costs - since their error cost you money.

Oh yeah... you gotta get your compensation.

    Hi all

Basically at the beginning of December I paid some money via my online banking account to my credit card. That has come off my balance and out of my bank account. However I spotted a few days later that the same amount that I had paid had been taken off my credit card again but not out of my bank account. Now I have had my statement through and I check all my accounts on a daily basis and the 'error' has not been corrected. Shall I 'confess' to my credit card company or leave it and hope they don't realise?

Put the money into a savings account and benefit from the interest until they ask for it back.

Unless they just take it and throw you in the red
  • If a correction would mean that you are put into the red or would struggle, then it is best to try to get this sorted.

However, if you have a safe buffer so a correction wouldn't make a lot of difference, I'd keep quiet and see if they notice, benefiting while they haven't.

Banks/Credit Card Companies aren't there to be your friends, they're there to make money from you. How keen do you reckon they'd be to tell you about errors in their favour?
