ADSL24 - LLU 12Mb or Standard 24Mb?

Hi, I am currently on a bundle with up to 24Mb download speed and for an equivalent price ADSL24 are offering me ADSL2+ LLU with up to 12Mb download speed.

Now I do not have the technical knowledge to tweak my line profile.

So my question is, it is better for me?

If it helps, Speedstest.net showed that I am getting: 17.98Mb/s Download, 0.99Mb/s Upload and Ping of 19ms

I'd stick with who you have at present. 17Mbps is an excellent speed!

Why would you want to get LESS speed for the SAME PRICE?

Who are you with just now?
  • I am under the impression that actual speeds received under LLU will be consistently quicker than standard broadband. I don't know the extent to which the speeds vary. I am currently with ADSL24 so I am not looking to change companies.

You are already on ADSL2+. If you weren't then you wouldn't be getting almost 18meg download. ;)

Whether you're on LLU or using the BT ADSL2+ network is another question. :)
  • So are there any benefits to me moving onto LLU?

You may already be on LLU. What makes you think you're not?
  • Because I know which package I am on, there is a one pound difference in price.

Benefits were that LLU providers were rolling out ADSL2/2+ before the exchanges were upgraded for IPStream customers. This is irrelevant as you say you have an ADSL2+ service on a non-LLU line.

Also, contention may be lower on an LLU line but it depends how many people are using that provider's service at your exchange.

So I'll go back to my previous question:

(Well, £1 difference as you have now clarified). :)

If you switch to a 12meg package you'll lose 50% of your current download speed. However you may have a less-contended service, and the LLU service may not be subject to port throttling (e.g. P2P).
  • The one pound saving is immaterial.

What I am struggling to understand is with the lower contention and no port throttling whether I will achieve any overall benefits. If not I don't understand why people would choose to note from one to the other.
