Walk into building society on a saturday morning with driving license/ passport and utility bill.

    Walk to counter.

Say "we would like to open a joint account. We need an account number today"

    Either it will be

    a) "We need to book an appointment"

    or

    b) "Yes take a seat I'll just get someone"

If a) walk out down the road to the next bank/ building society and repeat.
Believe it or not that is not a good tactic.
Banks are businesses at the end of the day and look for value from customers (as customers do).
We do not know how much this cheque is for but if they smell that they are being ''used'' just to get this cheque cleared then they will send you on your way.
My tip is to contact a bank where you already have an account and ask to open a joint account there or get one name added to the other's account.
