No joint account, cheque made out to both.

of us.
As per the title, how do we cash the cheque if we do not hold a joint account. Nationwide closed the account(lack of use). I suppose i should have contacted them before but been a bit busy.

What are my options?

I thought aslong as you pay it in to an account of one of the names it should be fine? Not 100% sure but try anyway.
  • joint name cheques can only be paid into a/cs with both names on it..

single named cheques can go into single or joint a/cs..

  • When this happened to DH and I we both went to his bank (Halifax) and I signed the back of the cheque to say I agree to it going into his account.

had this when we got married, RBS said we'd have to open a joint account. Just handed them the cheque and they did all the work, no hassles.

Either you're going back a long time or - unusually - Halifax adopted the Nelson touch.

The Cheques Act 1992 put a stop to 'signing over' a cheque in the way you describe.

Ask whoever issued the cheque to either alter it to sole or write two cheques for equal amounts to seperate payees.

This will take longer to arrange than opening a joint account somewhere?

Walk into building society on a saturday morning with driving license/ passport and utility bill.

    Walk to counter.

Say "we would like to open a joint account. We need an account number today"

    Either it will be

    a) "We need to book an appointment"

    or

    b) "Yes take a seat I'll just get someone"

If a) walk out down the road to the next bank/ building society and repeat.
