  • Complete techie novice here - what exactly is a tablet and what does it do? Is it basically a screen used for browsing the internet (kind of like a laptop) without the whole bulkiness and wires involved with a pc? If so, if I bought this so I have to purchase a separate internet connection for it also or can it be used with my existing one? Sorry for the dumb questions but Ive been intrigued by these for a while, I want something that I can lounge on my couch with and browse the net and was considering a laptop but maybe this could be my solution without taking up too much space :)

I bought the Archos 10inch G2 8GB from hitari.co.uk over the christmas - very good tablet, bigger screen and reasonable price too - not sure how it is compared to the playbook
we purchasaed two archos tablets from mr t, one stopped charging within a week, the second one lasted 3 weeks, quite a common problem according to s.a
  • Brought one for my hubby as he wanted one for work and he could 'bridge' it with his Blackberry for Internet connection.
Once it was set up he found the apps were poor (as op said)and couldn't even get Sykpe.
After two weeks it switched off one day and didn't come back on. Took it back to Currys and their tech team tried but failed. Didn't bother ordering another and got our money back.

    Can anyone recommend another?
His requirements are, excel, word and PowerPoint viewable. Also a USB connection would be a real plus.
    Thanks

Still available at this price. I've had one (well I bought one for my other half) since release last April and I'm buying another now.

The new OS 2.0 software this week sorts out most of the issues people have mentioned. Native email and calendar, much faster and more responsive and the selection of apps (contrary to a previous poster's opinion!) has increased greatly in recent weeks. Android developers can convert their apps in minutes to put in the Blackberry store and you can even "sideload" existing android apps you have downloaded to install them as it runs most android apps (not all but most I've tried).

It's good without a Blackberry phone (you can "tether" it to any phone to get on the net) - but it really rocks with a BlackBerry (recently got one just for this reason) giving you secure emails on the Pb, even works to remote control the tablet and give you a "Physical" keyboard.

RIM may have had issues but they are investing in this platform as it forms the basis of their next gen phone operating system (based on the QNX operating system a RealTimeOperatingSystem - check it out it as it very mature, powers some amazing things and is rock solid).

GF got so fed up of me borrowing hers to give presentations (powerpoint via HDMI in presentation mode so I can read my notes on the PB simultaneously projecting the slideshow), I'm having to buy a new one for myself :)

Streets ahead of any Android tablet *near it's price range* (I've tried a few budget Android tabs and the quality of the PB shows them up).
