One of my two can do it occasionally and they're both fed on raw food. What I've narrowed it down to is it's their way of getting rid of something that they can't digest; with Wils it'll usually be a lump of bone that was smaller than her throat but bigger than her poop hole.
edited cos i forgot..... Rio wasn't too clever last week either which I think was a bit of constipation. He started to drink a lot more water and would be sick sometimes; pretty sure it was because he was trying to sick up what was making him blocked.0 -
I have seen this with megaesophagus, which really isnt what you want to hear, but your dog is not of an age to contract this, which is normally seen in very old dogs or puppies. It isn't like vomiting, it's just that the food doesn't reach the stomach, stays in the esophagus and then comes back the way it's gone down undigested.
Is your dog losing weight? that's usually a sign that the problem is something like that.0 -
Sorry not going to be loads of help, but I have a lab too, and she is quite often sick after drinking, although she only brings back up the water. Usually after a walk so she is probably really thirsty, labs dont do things slowly and she gulps away and will then wretch and bring some of the water back up. She's always done it so we've never taken her to vets about it. She can be sick with food now and again, but I put this down to a dog thing as it's not that often. Labs do eat very quickly, I suppose smaller meals spread out over the day might help. Also our lab was on JWB, I never put her on Junior though, I went straight from puppy to adult when she was 6mnths. Theres no need for junior really if you read ingredients not much different to adult. Oh and obviously mix it gradually over a few weeks with old food to help them adjust. Did the vet give you an indication that it may be the food then? What did he suggest?
Another thing we bought for our lab is a higher food and water stand, it can be more comfrotable for larger dogs to have their food higher off the ground so they're not stooping down to the ground.0 -

That's interesting - wonder if it was the rawhide bone thing as there were some largish bits of it in there yesterday. He's been having the Bonio ones with the chicken flavoured strip through. Thanks for your thoughts. I appreciate it.Don't grow up. Its a trap!

Hi Caroline,
He did lose weight last time but he had the double whammy of having diahrrea as well then. He looks fine now but it is probably too soon to tell.
I also found megaE when googling last night. I don't think the episodes are frequent enough for it to be that plus thankfully he doesn't have any of the other symptoms. The vet just thought he'd picked something up when out walking and got some sort of a virus from it. She definitely wasn't worried about him.
Thanks HDDon't grow up. Its a trap!

That's brilliant thanks. I don't remember him being sick ever on the puppy version - he's on Ocean fish and rice. I picked JWB because it doesn't have any nasties in it. Vet didn't mention his food as a possible cause. I'm just thinking back to when it first happened and it seems to be round about the time he was changed from puppy to junior. Not straight away otherwise that would've been really noticeable but within 2 to 3 weeks.
To be honest I'm wondering whether to have some more of the sensitivity control stuff from the vet and have him on that until he's a year.
He doesn't really gulp his water but the times he's been sick have been after prolonged drinking. Poor lad he looked so sorry for himself last night and needed loads of extra cuddles!
Great idea about the raised food bowl. Will check that out on Amazon/PAH asap.
Thanks,

Milo has recently been diagnosed with liver disease/hepatitis - not that i would imagine for one minute thats what your dog has - but what i wanted to say was that Milo now is not allowed to drink tap water because of the chemicals in it so i either have to boil the water then allow it to go cold (i've got some ready in 2 large containers) or pour straight from the tap and allow to stand for 48 hrs - i just wanted to mention this as I didnt realise until Milo's illness that tap water is full of chemicals which isnt good for them.A home is not a home ..... without a dog0

Some dogs just can not keep the filth down that is in processed dog food, its a fact of owning a dog, eat some yourself and see how long it takes to be sick...Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Labs are notorious for being greedy - be that with food, water, socks, xmas deccies
, golf balls - they don't mind which!
As a VN I think you just have a greedy lab pup who will make himself sick!
As always though - you the owner knows the pet best, and if in doubt a trip to the vets is advised.I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Eat some dog food and see if you'll be sick? If so it must be bad for your dog?
I'd spew eating raw, I'd spew eating tinned, I'd spew eating dry - Your point is?
ETA - I'm not a dog, and neither are you, so you cannot say your digestive responses will be the same as a canines... How many millions of years ago did we genetically split again? Oh yeah - thousands and then some!I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
