Declined credit card application

Hello

I have applied for a credit card with my bank Nat West and have been declined even though I don't have any outstanding debts with them. The only reason I can think of is that I have too many cards. A quick check found two cards I don't use, one of which I'd forgotten I had. I am now going to cancel any unused cards. But after I've done this, and assuming that this is the reason I have been declined - they said they would write to me and inform me of the reason - how soon can I apply again? Will another application soon after being declined be declined because I have been declined? How long should I leave it before re-applying?

Thanks.

Why not use one of the cards you found?

  • NatWest's website says you should wait at least 6 months, so I would wait well over 6 months (to avoid looking desperate) from the date of the refusal.

I suggest that your next step be to apply for a sub-prime card, and avoid any more negative stuff appearing in your credit history; so apply for a sub-prime card, and if you don't get it, don't apply for anything else for a long while.

Capital One has a sub-prime card with 0% deal on purchases for 6 months at the moment (see www. moneysavingexpert.com/cards/bad-credit-credit-cards#classic; the forum says I'm not allowed to post links, so you'll have to remove the space), so that's what I'd suggest applying for after you hear back from NatWest about what their reason for refusing you was.

You may benefit from getting an overdraft agreement on your bank account and then avoiding using it to show that you can handle credit.

    Good luck! :D

I'm about to apply for a NatWest credit card myself (and failing that, Capital One's).

Wait 2 - 3 months before reapplying to ensure all the CRAs are updated, if this is indeed the reason for the refusal.

But they generally are more bothered about available credit and income. Once credit exceeds a certain %age of income -> automatic decline.
