Long Stratton is one of the cheapest places to live in South Norfolk....for a reason - its a rat-run for the A140!

IF (and thats a HUGE IF) they ever build the by-pass there, the quality of life will vastly improve - but this is very unlikely at present and locals have been campaigning (unsuccessfully!) for years for this to happen.

Long Stratton is also becoming very over-run with cheap new build properties - which also bring along with it problems that you can get (social housing, lack of facilities etc). I used to live and work close by...and would never choose to live there in a million years!

    Agreed!

It's also one of those long villages straddling a main road, that seem to go on for ever. Ghastly place.

Thank you to everyone for your input.

I have been looking at Attleborough, Wymondham, Diss and Downham Market.

    We need:

    . Good secondary school
    . Good Infants/Primary Schools
. Work within 20 miles, although I am thinking of going self employed (Initially my income is not relevant to our purchase)
    . Childcare
. Do not want to buy a new build or live on a new build estate - hate them

I have lived in towns and very rurally before, and do prefer to be more rural than towny. I am quite happy to travel to supermarkets/clothing shops etc.

    Thanks everyone for your help.

Have a look at Loddon and villages south of Norwich too (Trowse, Framlingham Pigot, Brooke, Saxlingham Nethergate, Hempnall) - some are really pretty (and local schools have good reputations too). Although I wouldn't go as close as Framlingham Earl or Poringland as they are becoming hotspots for new housing developments and have lost their quaint village appeal recently due to this.

Diss is rather depressing - especially the town centre - everything has turned into a charity shop or a pound store!

Lots of new development in Wymondham - so you could find yourself part of an urban sprawl even if you choose somewhere on the outskirts (locals are getting concerned about Hethersett becoming part of Wymondham - if you see the huge new development inbetween you will know what I mean).

  • My inlaws live in Bunwell, just south of Norwich. Its lovely, has a rural feel but only 10 mins from Wymondham and Attleborough. We have been trying to move to Norfolk for a while, just waiting for a job to come up for DH!

If we were looking (I have 2 children one just in reception and the other is 2 and at nursery) we would buy in Bunwell, Spooner row or the villages around Wymondham (Morley etc) as all have brilliant schools with good reputations. We also looked at Downham Market and loved it but the school cathments were harder to work for the school and house we wanted. Also have a look at Denver just south of Downham Market. Good school, lovely rural feel but close to everything.

Good luck with your search and move!

  • A good few suggestions from others above.

Personally I wouldn't want to live in Downham Market, the west of Norfolk is often considered a little more odd and recluse. (apologies to those that live there).

It also doesn't have the best transport links to Norwich.

I know you say you would like somewhere in the south, i'm assuming for the transport links out of the county. It's a shame though because you're missing out on some lovely villages around the north norfolk coast or broads.

I have been recommended those areas. I can drive and so can my husband so transport links are not that important if you have other suggestions.
