Good broadband deals, no landline required?

  • ADSL / VDSL (BT Infinity) are delivered by telephone line, so for any of those products you will require a phone line.

As Virgin Media cable is not delivered by phone line you do not need one.

Also as mentioned any truly wireless broadband such as Wimax, Tooway satellite broadband or a 3G/4G mobile connection does not require a phone line but they are expensive.

I have today received a letter from BT saying I can get a free upgrade to BT Infinity fibre optic. I wonder if that means I can drop the landline, anyone know ?

you say no landline but some deals you can get a landline and BB for near enough the same price, I have just signed up with EE for broadband and landline for £16.50 a month, BT landline alone is £15.40 so only £1 more, unlimited too and 16mb.

No, because the last stage of the BT Infinity network (the green cabinet to your house) is still delivered by VDSL2 which uses the telephone line. Some rural areas have fibre directly to the door, in which case I assume a media converter is used instead of a modem and in that case you may not require a phone line, however this accounts for less than 10% of BT Infinity customers.

No you can't, it's fibre to the cabinet, not to the home. You still pay line rental as normal with FTTC (or any fibre service). It's only the modem install that is being offered free.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks Macman, the only reason i asked is because i read that Virgin broadband customers don't need to pay line rental, so i guess this is wrong ?

Virgin in some areas have cable, so in those areas you don't, cable can supply TV phone and broadband with no need for a separate phone line.
