how they charge for water

Options
astonished today by my water bill from Severn Trent,£172 for 6 months,
what astonishes me is i am charged for the SUPPLY of 52 cubic mtrs of water.
and then i am charged again for the USE of my 52 cubic mtrs of water that i have already paid for. there is also a Standing charge for both.
Surely once it is supplied to me and a charge for that supply made. how can they then make me pay for using what i have already paid for.
I know that this is how the bills are made up but when you look at it like this, it is simply double charging for the same thing, then of course there is drainage to add on.
I believe that fundamentally this is a dishonest practice, if you buy a pint in the pub, you don't then have to pay extra to drink it.

It is not double charging though.
Clean water by the cubic meter at a higher rate, this is for drinking as well as all other things

Standing charges cover the meter and any repairs etc

Used water (including SWD if payable) by cubic meter at a lower rate ( as clearly not all the clean water will be returned to the system ) and that covers all the cleaning and processing.
Clean and safe drinking water is not as cheap to produce as some seem to think and having it on tap for a couple of quid a cubic meter is far better then half the world.
You pay more for your pint in the pub then you do for a whole cubic meter of water so although I understand what you are saying I can't agree.

You are being charged for removal and treatment of used water. Do you think the drainage and sewage system is maintenance and cost free?

Part of the cost of your pint funds the pubs toilets which is where your pint ends up.

And while I think about it, the reason behind the split in charges is simple.
It use to be one price per cubic meter to include used and clean and one set of standing charges but that was unfair on all those with septic tanks or those who had one provider for clean and one for used so that figure was split into 2, the charges did not increase due to that split but it mean that people only pay for what they actually get.

It is the only fair way to charge through a water meter

you have it wrong you are charged for supplying you with fresh clean water by charging you a standing charge and an amount for the water per mtr2 (1000 ltrs) then you are charged for removing the waste water from your property toilet sink ect and are charged for that in the way of a standing charge and a % amount of the water that you have used ie what comes out of the tap goes down the plug hole/drain.
then you will have a charge for removing the rain water from your property only if it gos down the drain and is not to a soakaway.
then you are charged for the highways water the water that goes down the drains in the road
