Keeping the bottom of the oven clean ...

Thank you everyone - seems that a lot of people use a baking tray on the bottom so I'll do that ... hopefully it won't affect the air circulation then
I do usually put anything that might bubble over onto a baking tray but pizzas obviously go directly on the shelves so it may have been from those. It was pretty grim though (but I'm pleased to say is rather beautiful now!!) I keep opening the door and looking at it lol!!

I used to keep a baking tray on the bottom of my oven specifically to stop the air circulating - out of the oven. There was a decent sized hole rusted through the bottom and I couldn't really afford a new oven!
I'm in a new house now and still don't have a proper kitchen so I'm using a microwave on combi-convection setting. I have absolutely NO idea how I'm going to get that clean! Have to confess I was glad to see a crack appearing in the door so I can justify throwing it away and buying a new one when we get round to putting a new kitchen in. Sinful I know but I REALLY don't want to clean it!0 -
Bibbly, if you have time on your hands would you care to come and have a go at mine? I promise that I will admire it frequently, I can do that bit.:D
I have a sheet of something on the bottom of my oven, well it's probably welded to it by now. Think I got it in Lakeland and it can't have been too expensive because I don't do expensive. I don't do oven cleaning either!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:I believe that friends are quiet angels

Now if anyone can share any secrets on how to keep the ROOF of my oven clean, I'm all ears
I don't mind soaking and scrubbing the shelves, or the bottom and the sides are supposed to be self cleaning, but the roof, well now that's an enigma. I will never buy a fan assisted oven ever agin when this one finally dies.0 -
I lay tin foil on the base because I am cheap. But I have a fan oven and it flaps about and drives ne insane. What could I anchor it with?0

I have a flat baking tray that sits in the bottom of the oven. Once a month I take it out, scrape off any lumps and put it in the dishwasher with the rest of the oven racks, grill pan, top burner supports and the brackets for the shelves, which just unhook from the sides. Then while the dishwasher is running I wipe down the sides and top of the oven with a solution of water, Fairy liquid and a squirt of lemon juice, put the oven on at medium for twenty minutes, allow to cool then wipe down again with plain water. This gets 95% of the grot off for almost zero effort. Once a year I give it a really good clean with oven cleaner, but it's never so filthy it's a disgrace.
For microwaves btw the easy solution to keeping it clean is to never microwave anything uncovered. The ££ shop and Ikea sell domed plate covers for about £1 each and if you use it faithfully your microwave will never need more than a monthly wipe down with a damp cloth.Val.0 -
Be aware that some ovens (mine is one of them) have the heating element in the base so you should never put anything directly on to the base. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I also use a baking tray in the bottom of the (fan) oven. Any spillages I get rid of with one of those scraper tools they sell for getting paint off windows!
I also have a full size grill tray and keep that on the top shelf when I'm cooking a roast or something. It's easier to clean the bottom of that (with Brillo pad - cut in half obviously, so OMS) than cleaning the roof of the oven ....shudders at thought.Normal people worry me.0 -
i love hobsons choice idea of putting something above as i hate it when a full chicken spits all over the grill bit at the top cos it stinks for ages
my grill pan is the same size as oven so sits in the bottom to catch the muck lol
i have cleaned my oven today with tesco value scrubbers and put trays and shelfs in dish washer..thoughive treated myselfto2 new oven trays as cant have mother in law seeing my manky ones on sundayHave a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T0
