I have done a search and couldn't find anything though I'm sure it's all here somewhere - sorry.
I have just spent a LONG time cleaning my oven ready for Christmas (it was quite desperate :embarasse) I know that you can buy those sheets that are especially for the bottom of the oven but they're quite expensive and I wondered if there was an alternative. I knew this would be the place to ask

Yep, baking tray covered in tin foil or just plain tin foil on the bottom.0

Well, I have been doing it for years and everything has been ok. Also, when you cook something that may spill over, put it on a baking tray so that catches the spills.
Why would a tray stop air from circulating? It's no different from cooking on the bottom of the oven, surely?0 -
I think you can get those liners on ebay reasonably cheap. I used to have one. But now just give the bottom a scrub every few weeks. I use wire wool which seems to make the job easier.0

The instructions that came with our oven specified that things must not be placed on the bottom of the oven, and must only be placed on the shelves. The reason they gave is that it stops the air from circulating.0 -
I use a large baking tray, sometimes with tinfoil, often not! Every now and then I scrape it and bung in dishwasher - job done!0

Really? Never heard of that one before. Does it make a difference?0 -
depends also where your heating element is. I had one with the heat coming from the bottom so nothing could be placed on the bottom or it would burn, it was hard to clean. Now I have one from the top and to keep the bottom clean I always put a baking tray under anything that may bubble over or drip down. The fan still blows the air about ok0

One of my shelves is solid so the bottom doesn't get dirty. The solid shelf on the other hand gets ditched. I do have one of those liners, I think it was from Aldi and I paid just a few pounds. It does help but quite sinfully I'm sure, when it's really filthy I take it outside and pressure wash it. I know this doesn't help with the bottom of the oven problem but it may help someone.0

I just keep my largest non stick baking tin in the bottom of the oven. a doddle to wash once a month or so (or more if it needs it).0
