Hi,
This may not be the best place but it is motoring and road related so here goes.
I think road angel does a physical machine for this but it’s quite expensive. I want a mapping device or gps which includes the current speed of the road I’m on as there’s not always signs or indications. I have googlemaps on my android phone but was wondering if anyone knew of an android app to show the current road speed. Don’t mind paying something if necessary as its cheap for peace of mind when I’m somewhere unfamiliar.
Cheers guys.

I've got an app on my Blackberry called "GPS Tool" which does exactly what you require, and it's free. Might be worth you searching to see if they do an Android version.
Edit: I was *really* surprised how far out my car's speedo was at motorway speeds."There may be a legal obligation to obey, but there will be no moral obligation to obey. Any of the satnav apps, BUT.... and its a big one you cant rely on them to be 100% accurate..
Speed limits change faster than these things update.
bitemebankers.... Not as surprised as you will be when you find out how inaccurate your phone is
as getting the correct speed.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I don't think the gps in your phone will react quickly enough to give you an accurate speed readout.
I used Google maps in a car (as a passenger) and it frequently had to play catchup to our location as we drove along. I've got a Galaxy S which should have plenty of processing power for this.
It's fine if you are walking but I have doubts as to how reliable it would be at speed (and wouldn't stand up in court when you were appealing against a speeding fine)0 -

I worry about people not paying enough attention to the road to be able to spot speed limit signs or not to know how to work out the limit when there are none present (lamppost spacing for example).
That said, I know places/towns around here where the road sign-age is terrible.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

I've not encountered any road where there is no indication whatsoever of the speed limit. And if there isn't it's safe to assume that street lighting = 30mph unless signs say otherwise and no streetlighting = 60mph unless signs say otherwise (70mph on dual carriageway and motorways)
It's really not that difficult - and I don't say that to sound patronising, it really isn't and investing in technology isn't the way to go.0 -
Its not I want to use the phone to tell me how fast Im going but I want the app to tell me the speed of the road Im currently on.
I do quite alot of travelling on unfamiliar roads and want to stay legal, some are just downright confusing. Within 500 yards of mu own house is a 20,30 n 40 with just 1 turn between them

I have a TomTom which supposedly shows this information but it's so out of date and inaccurate to be completely useless. I'd say what you are looking for isn't really available in any usable format.
Just have to keep your eyes peeled0 -
Can work out the speeds ussually, but fair enough if theres no quick app :-)0

It's highly accurate at giving the speed of the vehicle, but it seems that's not what the OP is looking for. My mistake.
I don't know of a standalone app that will give the speed limit. And you're right, most sat nav apps - especially the ones for phones - don't update that quickly in order to preserve the battery, so probably not great to rely on."There may be a legal obligation to obey, but there will be no moral obligation to obey.
