Money instead of wedding gifts?

Wonder of anyone can help -

A friend of mine is getting married in July, but instead of having a gift list, she would like to ask guests for either money or vouchers (she and her fiance already has a house full of towels, gadgets and appliances etc so has no use for anything like that) as they're trying to save for a deposit on their first 'owned' home. My question is, does anyone know of any websites or places she can find 'poems' or little ditties, asking for money IYSWIM? I don't think 'give us money instead of presents' quite has the same ring to it, so she thought it would be nice to find a poem to convey the words for her. I know they exist, because I went to a wedding last year where I was asked to give money instead of a gift, but I just can't seem to find any examples online - can anyone help?

Thanks!

Did a quick search for you and found this:

The wedding has come, its here at last
what present shall i get? i hear you ask
    a set of glasses,towels or a toaster,
    vases,plates or even some coasters.
these things we already have in our nest
so if we may we'd like to suggest
a gift of money would be best.
we know reading this some may be offended
we hope your not as this wasn't intended
but the life we have we hope you agree
means being honest with you is the best way to be

    Or

'We know you want to find something nice
But it's such a hassle to find the right price
So come and enjoy the day all sunny
We really would appreciate a little money'.

    or

We're going to get married and it's going to be fun.
We really hope that you can come.
We've been together since time began,
So we already have every pot and pan.
We have an idea and may we suggest,
That money towards our new home would be best.
So please don't think we are being funny,
If we say "can we please have money"?
Most things in life are beyond our control,
for everything else there is a spreadsheet
    ;)

  • Those poems sound great! If they are going to be paying for a honeymoon themselves, then an alternative option could be to ask for gift vouchers towards it, I think most large travel companies offer this.

we used http://www.smartweddinglists.com/ for our wedding to ask for money for our honeymoon. instead of asking for money outright we asked people to buy us experiences i.e day trips meals out for the honeymoon. the site collects the money for you and then transfers it to you deducting a 3% charge i think, but you can add pictures etc so people feel they are actually buying you something not just handing over cash.

Love the idea... but it's a 7.9% service charge... Must be possible to set something up for less... hmmm off to ponder if I can build this myself and share it on here...

All we require at our wedding is your presence. However, if you were thinking of a present we would relaly appreciate dollars for our honeymoon.

  • Hi - here's what we used for ours in August -

It’s your presence we are looking forward to and not your presents, but if you do feel you would like to give something then we would love it if you could help us towards having the honeymoon of our dreams. Alternatively, we do have a small list at John Lewis, details of both are enclosed. See you at the wedding! K & A.

  • :T Thank you so much for your replies peeps - I was going round and round in circles searching on the net, so I really appreciate it (i'm sure my friend will even more- she's a bit of a technophobe though so can't search herself!)

    We'd like to ask
    If you so wish
    For money towards
    Our wedding bliss!'
  • When I get a wedding invite it is usually (99% of the time) from a couple who are already living together. I haven't seen a wedding gift list for years now so I would automatically give money or vouchers in a gift-wallet. I think most people do this nowadays, my brother's wedding was last year and they received money or cheques from everyone and were able to get the things they really wanted.
