I live in Portsmouth, and Milton or Southsea is probably the best area. But you won't really get anywhere Rural. North Southsea is more student/house share areas as they are large Victorian houses. It depends what your budget is, and the size of place you want really - although parking can be an issue if you don't have a drive etc.0

North End is a hole.
I would say that for a GP a nice spot up on the hill at Farlington would be pretty cool or a little further out towards Emsworth
Portsmouth is, used to be the most densely populated area in Europe so space comes at a hefty premiumSealed pot challange no: 3390 -
The whole of Portsmouth is a dump (thin strip of Southsea excepted). It vies with Southampton for biggest sh**hole in the South.
I don't agree with the adverse comments about my adopted home City, but wouldn't want to comment about Portsmouth!RICHARD WEBSTER
As a retired conveyancing solicitor I believe the information given in the post to be useful assuming any properties concerned are in England/Wales but I accept no liability for it.0 -
I'm originally from Porstmouth (Hilsea). My folks live further out now (Bosham), very rural. Southampton is an easyish commute from there. Getting into Portsmouth is possible by car, train or bus. My folks go everywhere on public transport, its really not that bad, buses seem plentiful0

TBH you'd be better off buying or renting well away from Portsmouth. Depending on your budget, which I would suspect would be reasonably good, you would be best off looking to rent towards Chichester. Emsworth is a really nice place to live with some good houses, village feel with butchers etc and right on the sea. the small hamlets and villages between emsworth and Chichester are all pretty good, though southbourne can be a hit and miss area. Commuting from these areas are relatively easy until you hit the M275 (A27/M27 from Chichester is normally pretty good) - leave earlier or later. It has got a lot better since the dockyard moved its main gate.
I travel from Emsworth daily to Cosham and Chichester and as long as I beat the school traffic (about 0810 onwards) then its a very easy journey. Of course, with the Emsworth - Chichester area you have 6 or 7 train stations that lead straight to commercial road (about 5 min walk to Queens street)
If you West of Portsmouth i.e. Fareham/Whiteley/Segensworth the morning and evening traffic can be a massive ball ache.
Also considered Rowlands Castle/Petersfield (Train Links to Pompey). Cowplain and Horndean are nicer areas but can feel like an old folks home and be a bit isolated from decent amenities.
Also look at Havant (avoid Leigh Park/West Leigh) - Warblington/Denvilles/East Havant have some lovely properties with mainline train station (walk in 10 mins max) and close to relatively good amenities.
Don't forget you can also cycle to work - there are some pretty safe routes to portsmouth, though not always as safe as I would like!30th June 2021 completely debt free…. Downsized, reduced working hours and living the dream.0 -

If God was giving the UK an enema, Portsmouth is where he'd stick the hose :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -

I was being needlessly unkind when I denigrated both Southampton and Portsmouth - and after all, the OP is coming from Swindon and let's face it, even Pompey is therefore an improvement on his hometown...0
