where would you rent/buy in Portsmouth

Would be wondering if I can have any advice on where I could rent in Portsmouth. I am a GP by profession, my work could either involve a commute from Swindon to Portsmouth 2 days a week (Monday and Friday) and 2 days work at Southampton hospital Vs renting a place. I have heard horror stories about congestion on M275/M27 and am left wondering whether renting / (and perhaps later on buying) is a better option. I would want to live somewhere family friendly in a nice preferably rural area close to amenities. I have a young daughter of 1 yrs age. Thus would prefer somewhere nice where I wouldn't regret living for next 5 years. Wife likes shopping and I like to live in a place by the sea with plenty of activities etc.
Cheers !

If you want rural you have to live outside of Portsmouth, not in Portsmouth! So I don't see how your commuting problem would be much improved. That said many people say getting around within Portsmouth is worse than getting here, because it's an island.
Could you not just commute by train?A waist is a terrible thing to mind.0 -
No direct train, It would take 3 hrs each way , 2 changes.Inside I am THINKING.0

I would be working at John Pounds center so quite close to M275 and A3, work involves doing home visit for patients, so car needed and better option anyways. Would need to upgrade to diesel though !Inside I am THINKING.0

I have a friend who is a Dr and used to work at Portsmouth and Southampton hospitals, and he lived in North End, just off the M275. This however could hardly be classed as rural but has all the amenities close by within walking distance.

TBH, North End is a dump!
For rural you would need to be looking north of A27 between Portsmouth and Southampton (eg Bishops Waltham, Wickham, Botley.
M275 may become a nightmare though as they have just got Gov funds to dig it up and put in another junction at Tipner.0 -
I live in Portsmouth and my ex-gf used to work at the John Pounds centre, so I know where it is.
Going right outside the box, how about the Isle of Wight? You could then get the Fast Cat to Portsmouth Harbour and walk from there. Obviously commuting away from Portsmouth with a car would be a pain.
Aside from that, nowhere in Portsmouth is rural at all. I think it's one of the most densely populated areas in the country. If you went north up the A3, there are small rural villages such as Clanfield and there's also Petersfield, which is a bit bigger.0 -
I agree with above, no way would I recommend Northend my hubbie refuses to even go to the shops there, never mind live there! lol
If you have the money there's some lovely homes in Southsea on the seafront, but we're not talking average or budget houses!
The problem with choosing the IoW is that you end up with different transport issues, if the weather is bad you won't be able to get the ferry, and it's also a lot further to commute to Swindon, not to mention it costs more if you are taking your car.A waist is a terrible thing to mind.0 -

John Pounds is easy to get to within Portsmouth, but to be honest almost everything is easy to get to within Pompey, if you can walk, cycle (are willing to put up with the buses - public transport drives me crazy as I depend on it to get anywhere) or drive!A waist is a terrible thing to mind.0 -

I like North End! I think it is very lively and vibrant. Each to their own, however.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Gunwharf Quays maybe, other than that I'd be looking outside of the main island. Clanfield as recommended would probably be a good place to start.0
