New Gas Meter - More Usage!?

Options
Hi All

I've been really anal with cutting down on how much gas I'm using. I had a new grade A efficiency boiler installed last Jan, have taken the heating off timer so its only on for 2hrs a day instead of 7hrs and really been putting the effort in to cut back.

I checked my usage (rather than cost) and I've used more units in the last quarter than I ever have since I've lived in that house, 8 years!? By 40 units.

There was also a mandatory meter change last Jan and wondered if this new meter could be making a difference? BG tell me if I want the meter tested and there is nothing wrong with it, it will cost me £70.

Any thoughts?

First thought, was the old one imperial and the new one metric?

    Maybe the old meter under-charged?
  • Jeez Xbm, I don't know - I'm almost inclined to ask if thats a joke?!

You may well be right nej, I just wondered if anyone else had similar experience. I'll hold off for now and keep a beady eye on it.

    Thanks both, for ur thoughts.

Ours is the same - gas price has shot up since new meter was fitted .... we think its corrupt. What do we do? Does anyone know?
  • Metric meters (5 dials) go round about three times quicker than imperial meters (4 dials). Check how many numbers your old bill had on it....

Meters almost always under charge rather than overcharge am afraid. You can get your meter tested for about £65 if you want though.

As nej suggests surely it is far more likely that an old meter under-reads rather than a new meter being faulty.

The mechanical principle of a gas meter is really very simple. It is a vane that is spun by the incoming gas. The revolutions of the vane determine the meter reading.

By units, do you mean as indicated on the meter or kWh?

Something is wrong if your consumption is much higher in the warmest winter for many years.

The new meter is going to be metric - could XPM's suggestion be feasible? Its happened plenty of times.
  • Thanks Hoping, in my ignorance I didn't know about the metric/imperial difference and shall look into it.

Cardew, by units I was referring to the kWh on my bill. Apparently this is the warmest winter for 19 years, another reason I am questioning the usage. I'll definately check out XBM's suggestion - it's given me a starting point.

    Thank you both.

Sorry for the shortness of my first post. As others have said, metric meters 'units' are a third of the size of imperial units, so your meter readings will be higher.
Check your last bill, if the price of your gas was between about 8p to 12p a unit (lower rate if two tier) then you were probably imperial.
