Can you recommend a phone for me please

I am a little in the dark ages so far as phones go. So some advise would be appreciated.

I have always had a nokia so wanted another one really (only because Ive always found them easy to use), anyway my contract with vodafone is up so had a look and liked the nokia lumia but it was a bit much and then saw the nokia 700 and thought that would be ok, worked prices out etc and decided it was cheaper to buy the handset and get a sim only contract.

New contract is 12 months @ £9, 300 mins, 300 txts, 500gb, vp
currently use 90mins, 15 txts and no internet. But want to use the phone now to check emails etc when out and about.

I have seen the nokia 700 for around £250 so it is better than the £26 a month they wanted for a 24 month contract with the phone.

However, I think it would be wise to ask the good people on here for some advice about handsets before I buy one, ie is it suitable, are there better options, best place to buy from?

Thanks in advance
karen

Is it suitable? Sounds like it.

Are there better options? God yes. Aside from two (soon to be three) handsets (Lumia 800, N9 & the upcoming Lumia 710), all Nokia smartphones run the outdated Symbian operating system.

For less money you could get an Android handset instead, which will do more.

Smartphones, like computers, run some operating system.
Unlike computers they normally can only run some particular type of operating system.
Android handset is a smartphone running Android operating system.
Other main operating systems are iOS, Windows Phone, Symbian, Blackberry OS.

My OH has had the nokia N8 for a few months now,fab phone, lots of apps, internet is good, camera is brill 12.1 mega pixel.i on the other hand wanted a phone similar but more along the same lines as an iphone so went for the HTC sensation, this is a nearly £500 phone to buy so out of your budget unless u stuck with contract but with your usage u would most defiently have to pay some towards the phone to get a smaller monthly plan.id recomend the N8

Yep HTC is often a good bet, as long as it's not a Wildfire as they're pretty low end.

Having had three HTC's I wouldn't have another - you buy one and its superceeded by a new model within months - its resale is minimal (resale is an important consideration on sim only purchases as its what makes the maths make sense).

All three of mine went in for repair - (Desire x 2, Desire S x1) - all repairs were awful at best.

I would be looking down the Samsung/Motorola/Nokia route - if you can get a Lumia 800 (this is a windows phone, not a symbian phone) then as long its under £408 its cheaper to go sim only, if you can't get it for that low then the contract makes more sense for you.
  • I have an xperia x10 and my wife has the x10 mini, in my opinion avoid the xperia range. I quite like the samsung galaxy ace for around £149 on most networks, it is a good starter smartphone. Sounds good for you as you only want e-mail and occasional browsing.
