Or you could just keep your own and give your daughter the double barrel?
If you marry the father of your chid you can have their birth certificate changed, you don't have to do it by deed poll.
Don't give up in things you care about just because there are a few administrative obstacles!
I'm very firmly of the opinion that either both should change their name or neither.0 -
Me and My DH have both gone double barrelled - only my family has my surname, and his is one of the most common names in the UK so Im not changing to that. But we wanted to have the same name. (and I think its incredibly sexist if only the woman changes - 'just because')
Weve changed everything using just our marriage certificate. So you dont need to worry about getting a deed poll or anything like that. Weve both got our driving licenses back now with our new names and all our bank stuff is changed. For credit cards etc most of the companies say on their websites to call them up.0 -

Thanks, my dtr is 10 - can we do this? Also she has both surnames now, which from quick scan of google appears she would have needed to just have my surname and not my partners. Just worried as want to buy a house next year and do not want this to cause problems0 -
I dont see why either of you changing your name should cause a problem. In the UK you can call yourself whatever you want. There is nothing that says you have to get a deedpoll. Infact most of the websites I read that suggested you buy a deed poll, were then linked to their website - which is no surprise as they are a business.
Apparently from posts Ive read on here you can also change your name 'officially' by getting a solicitor to do it, and its supposed to be cheaper. So incase of any issues you could just do that when the house stuff comes up as youd be using a solicitor then anyway.0 -

You can call yourself whatever you want as long as there is no intention to defraud, but I believe it can be hard convincing banks, DVLA etc. to go along with it!
I suppose its simpler with just adding a surname though, rather than a complete change.0 -

Yes exactly. I mean with a marriage certificate you have a reason for the change.
I guess if you just turned up saying youd randomly changed it then they might have more questions, and therefore a deed poll could be useful even if its not technically needed!0 -
If he will be D-B too the easiest way to get this done is to get him to change his name by deed before the wedding.
Then you will be just taking his D-B name as is on the marriage cert, just like normal, this makes it easy peasy!

We thought about doing that, but then we ran out of time. And then afterwards I realised the money to pay for the deedpoll would have been a waste of money anyway as we can just use our certificate.
I ordered about 4 copies, so I could send them to the DVLA and other places without worrying about it getting lost.0 -
So I should be ok but husband will need to change by deed poll0

I used to work for somebody who had a double barrelled surname. He and his wife had combined their names on marriage. Later they got divorced, but he kept the name. Then he married again and his new wife took his double barrelled surname, so she ended up having half a surname of his ex-wife................. strange beyond belief!Make £2026 in 2026
