are you losing faith in the food industry ?

hope the mods dont mind me posting this... but i thought it would be nice to hear peoples views and opinions... and maybe solutions...if not please delete..

with the latest food/ animal disease to happen ..with bernard mathews......to add to the long list of things that have happend over the last few years.....

within the food chain etc.....are you losing faith in the government.. and the food industry itself ?

organic food.. being sold and its not organic... high pesticide residuce found....... bse....in cows.... saminela in eggs and poultry........foreign foods coming into our food chain.. which have less hygeine... and animal welfare policies....spices containing poison etc......

as os'ers.... we are trying to cook from scratch to have healthier and cheaper meals.... plus trying to keep away from all those nasty additives that they add to ready meals to make it look... tast nice.. and last longer....

but even our raw foods are under fire.... because..... companies are either cutting corners.... or adding extra chemicals... or importing for other countries and saying that they are british... to try and make more profit.....

as at the end of the day.. i feel i am responsible for the food on the table for my family.....and i feel its a mine field on times..... especially because... most of the time its my purse that governs what i can afford to buy....

I've never had much faith in the food industry ;)
  • Yes - big time. With the positive side effect that it is encouraging me to cook more from scratch & grow my own fruit and veg. It's also made me eat less meat - I only buy organic from somewhere I trust, but it does mean that I can afford meat less often. As far too much of my diet was meat and carbs with no veg I view this as a good thing.

One of the things that really gets me is when you look at the offers from the supermarkets 90% of the BOGOF & other offers are for food you probably shouldn't be eating, over processed ready meals, fizzy drinks, crips, white bread etc. It just seems that although they give lip service to making our lives healthier, when you are in the store it's harder if price is a high priority.

But as they say nothing worthwhile was ever easy. If you boycott the companies that have been shown to lie, they it'll help get the message through. Or at least make you feel better that the lying cheats haven't got your money :)

This thread would get a wider readership and a broader post of opinion (in my opinion);) in the Discussion Board:D

I'm inclined to leave it here for a while to get the first rush of answers - and then move it across to DT which would indeed be a good place for it.

    HTH :)

  • I have lost faith, not just in the industry, but in the whole food chain. I think it was a posting on the ethical board about what free range really means for hens that shattered what faith I did have. I guess I was too reliant on an Archers induced view of farmers- I want a Pat and Tony Archer to buy from.

I'm sure there are marvellous farmers out there but living in London I have little access to their goods - even the farmer's market in Bromley has all its vegetables neatly packaged in polystyrene boxes so I've stopped buying there.
Am now just trying to grow what I can in my small garden (so far only cress!!), cook from scratch and think hard before I pop something in my trolley. And wish I had known all this before I lost all influence on my teenage children.

I can't help but suspect that some of it is simply scaremongering. It's almost as if the media is trying to initiate some kind of moral panic among the British public by claiming this, that and the other about the food we're eating.

I agree to an extent though, Britain would be a healthier place if we adopted our parents/grandparents ways of living. Obesity rates were FAR lower 50 years ago when people ate really hearty homecooked meals and didn't have all the mod-cons to eliminate the need for elbow grease.

I can't say I'm not partial to the odd bit of junk food (she types as she scoffs a bag of crisps and a can of pop), but for the most part I eat fresh & healthy and I excercise well (I help run a mountain bike club so I have no choice!).

I am sick of the cruelty and explotation of animals so that the supermarkets can offer cheap food while maximising profits.
I will not buy meat produced in the EU as their treatment of animals is appalling. I prefer to pay more for British meat, preferably organic.

Without going all philosophical I think society will eventually reap what it sows.
No wonder bird flu etc is on the cards with the disgusting conditions animals and poultry are kept in. Yet the big supermarkets continue to increase on their massive profits. I think the Government should intervene and say only meat produced to at least British standards should be available for sale.

I have seen some chicken packaging that says "produce of Thailand?" Can you imagine the conditions they are kept in to work out cheaper than our own poultry.

I am fed up with the Government not interveing and putting health and safety of the consumer first.

Oh, if only it were that simple Cazz. It's the really hearty homecooked meals that have made me overweight  and I'm not particularly idle either - kneading bread must use up some calories :D
