Sure times are hard they are for everyone but some things I believe you should never cut corners on, food, fuel for your body and mind is at the top of this list for me.

I don't see it as cutting corners. It's about getting the best possible quality for your money which i think Aldi and Lidl do far better than the Big4.

Expensive doesn't necessarily always mean better.
It's not how far you fall - it's how high you bounce back.... :j
    Happiness is not a destination - it's a journey :)
  • Avoid Aldi Corale baked beans they're absolutely rank :o

These are the only one's my teenage Daughters will eat!! :D

I was in Lidl the other week. An older lady was in front of me and she had quite a bit of shopping, some of it quite heavy. The CO immediately buzzed for someone to come help her pack and take it out to the car for her.

Don't think you would get that service in Tesco ;)

I went to Lidl today and the lady in front of me had walking sticks [at the till] she was also offered the same help. This is so unheard of. I agree, Tesco would never do this. :j
  • Have to agree, our Aldi has become noticeably busier in the recent months. I particularly like the fruit and veg which is loads cheaper and better quality than other local supermarkets, and with last weeks vouchers from the Daily Mirror, I have saved loads more money. Hopefully a few other customers have also saved a bit extra today, as I left coupons that I didn't need on the relevant products. My store had 3 tills open today, but cashiers were very efficient and polite (much nicer than Tesco Trouts!) In fact I haven't been to Tescos since they stopped taking competitors coupons and introduced their 'Price Flop' promotion!
  • I've been doing about 75% of our weekly shopping in Aldi since 2006 and reckon I've saved thousands! I did my big christmas shop yesterday and bought bags of sprouts, carrots and parsnips for 39p and 2.5g of potatoes for 69p. The clementines were 69p and are lovely.
The costs are kept low as they don't employ lots of staff in each store and whenever the queues get too long they open another till. The staff are always really friendly and as regards the lack of baskets or free bags, you just have to get used to it and put on your 'Aldi' head when you shop in there.
I've never had a problem with the quality of their products and when I read the comments from the Aldi bashers, I just smile and think well I'm happy to save money and less people in there mean I get my shopping done quicker! :D

    Got to agree with that.
Never buy bags at either Aldi or Lidl. Normally have my own bags or if I don't, I just use an empty box and fill that. Goes in the back of a car better than bags anyway.

One positive with Aldi is their ads, they've really pushed it this year with some great funny ads.
My fave was the "I don't like tea, I like Gin" - loved it.
I spend more in Lidl though than Aldi as I like the Lidl "half-price weekends". Use Aldi for veg, cheeses and I prefer their Quixo gravy granules.

I cannot stand Aldi or Lidl, I even now put Asda in the same bracket as these 2 now ;)

I have a theory that the people who shop at these places and constantly whine on about how great they are are really trying to convince themselves rather than others. Sure times are hard they are for everyone but some things I believe you should never cut corners on, food, fuel for your body and mind is at the top of this list for me.

I do not entertain any kind of processed foods either, over the years I have found the cheapest way to shop has been buying good quality fresh produce[/QUOTE]

I agree with your last statement completely. Part of the reason I started shopping in Lidl and Aldi in the initial stages was because I could buy peppers, avocados, aubergines, oily fish, olive oil, red wine etc at a good price but very good quality. The same products are classed as 'luxury'rather than 'everyday basics' in the likes of Asda so there is no comparison to be made.

As far as I know neither Aldi nor Lidl take credit cards but both take debit cards.

I do some shopping at Aldi.I find the quality of some products below standard and some very good. The standard is no way as good as Tesco.
So don't kid yourself you can do all your shopping at Aldi.Of course if money is tight you can compromise and do all shopping at the discounters.
